IMO they are cheesy and gimicky but then i am a old set in my vintage ways :)
I like 'em. Fugga Dugga and opens up my chest for singing.....Cool1
I used to use one as my main hat. No legs
to get in the way of the double bass pedal.

i see some metal players just use sloshy closed hats with no pedal? i set up some other hats near my ft but found the fact that they where different than my main hats put me off my playing, i guess i would have to find some hats about the same, just trying to open up my style, but i guess it would come at a price.
I have and use two, I have remo spoxe mounted on them. I have 12" and 14" sets one on left and one on the right. It gives a unique chick sound over the standard chick from the hi hat.
I have a remote hat that I don't use- I do use an x-hat frequently that helps my ergonomics- I don't cross my arms to play a back beat as much- let's me breathe easier when playing live and just have more openness in getting a good snare hit. Isn't vintage though lol although it's made in Japansinger

It's the journey not the destination.
I use one because I have too.
I have too many drums on the left side where a traditional hat stand would sit.
Would have to do the splits to reach it.

I've used a Pearl remote hi-hat for years. Works great and can be positioned anywhere when attached to a boom stand.
