Received My PowerTone Snare Today...Surprise! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Okay, so I took a shot the other day at buying the chrome Powertone despite his "it has a haze" comment. Certainly, it was easy to assume that he might have "polished" it with steel wool creating lots of fine scratches that appeared in his photos.

However, to my surprise, this does not appear to be the case! The chrome on the shell is not scratched as one would expect it to look from steel wool. It actually has a pretty nice shine to it. It looks similar to other Powertones I have seen going for more than twice what I paid. If you shine a light on it, I do see where the chrome finish doesn't have the depth of some of my other snares, not sure if polishing will improve or not.

Certainly, it needs and will get, a thorough cleaning and polishing/detailing, but I'm now very happy that I took a chance on this snare.

At a serial number of 18xxx, I would think this is from the earlier days in Dayton, as I did read someone having one at 15xxx and still being in Cleveland.

I will post pictures of it finished as soon as I have time to do so.

Thanks for the assistance to all!

I have Dayton 15697, from immediately after the fire. Fairly positively dated to the weeks following the fire. I replaced two lugs on this drum that still, even 40 years later had smoke residue in them. They were distorted and cracked from heat. They werent side by side. And the other lugs were clean. The chrome may have still looked good when it left the factory, but, over time, they showed the heat stress.

The fire was Feb. 1967. Depending on orders for Powertones around that time period, your drum is after the fire, and could be as early as April, May 1967.

That's great, Ploughman! Cool story about the lugs still having smoke residue...so it sounds as if there were pieces saved from the fire (sorry I recall reading about it, but that was years ago and can't remember...age, you know!). So, imagine those lugs have some collectable value.

So, one question...okay two small ones:

- How long before the fire were drums produced/distributed from the Dayton building?

- Approximately what serial number would you think would be the earliest out of Dayton.

Not that I can actually do anything with this info, but as my wife says, I'm obsessive, obsessive, obsessive..... :)

Thanks very much for this information!

Its great to be part of this forum!!!!Excited
