Questions on 65 Ludwig Purchase-Relatively Urgent

Loading...

Hey Guys;

Been cruising around the site, looking for info and coming up a little short. Finding this site, and forum very useful, and inspiring, and have really appreciated all the feedback from my earlier posts. My situation is this; I've got a deal on the line for a 65, Ludwig, blue sparkle kit. Been going back and forth on price, and shipping etc, but there are a couple of issues. Seems to be a 20" kick with 13', and 16" toms, (not a straight S Classic, or Downbeat, though serial numbers seem consistent). Deal originally included a slightly later, (early 70s) acrolite snare, but they are now holding back on that, so it's just the kick, and two toms.

Firstly, there is a quarter inch, square,'mystery hole' a couple of inches below the cymbal mount on kick drum, and secondly there is the 'spur' issue... Figured, even with 20" kick, it should have the 'fold out spurs', is this not correct? Apparently, (have not seen pictures of spurs) they are straight, and retract into the drum... Would these have been an actual Ludwig factory option, or possibly a retrofit? Anyone? Unfortunately these are for sale in Canada, (where I am located) but at the other end of the country, so it's not a matter of my swinging by to take a look. Working on having it shipped for a grand, but between the hole, the spurs, and the non-inclusion of the snare, (not a huge deal) I'm now debating whether it's worth it. Any input would be greatly appreciated, as I find that there seems to be a lot of well informed folks here at VDF. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

NOT an "expert", but that price seems too high for the condition and lack of snare!

Is this a Club Date bass? That would explain the retracting spurs.

$1,000 seems steep, even for Canada. Are you in Toronto? There's a 1971 Luddy kit in Buffalo for just $450 right now.

Kits:
1950s Gretsch Name Band in Midnight Blue Pearl (13/16/22/14sn)
1965/66 Ludwig Club Dates rewrapped in Black Diamond Pearl (12/15/20)

Thanks guys - no, definitely not a Club Date, though posted pics, and additional e-mail pics don't show full kick drum. Not even 100% sure it's 20". Story is, dad bought for junior in states a couple of years ago, ("for $1,150") and now junior got a modern kit, which he has to pay dad back for. Seems legit, though all the issues are starting to discourage me. Kid keeping snare for new kit, and even had removed heads apparently - sounds like he'd planned to send them headless. Yeah, too many people out there trying to cash in on the 'vintage' thing to pay for something else that they want it seems. You should have seen another ad I just responded to for 'Ludwig Drums' for $450 - no pics posted, when I asked to e-mail, they were, (once) mid 70s, half stripped and looking like they'd been salvaged out of the neighbor's garbage. Seems good deals are getting harder to find, what with ebay and such at everyone's fingertips for price reference.

That price should include the Acrolite AND shipping.These are fairly common drums-good,but common.Do some shopping,unless blue sparkle is all it for you.

Thanks again guys. Appreciate the input. I've bailed on the transaction. Finding it not as easy to find what I'm looking for in Canada, but I'm patient. Back to scanning the classifieds. Cheers.
