is the rogers "big R" rim the same as the rogers "tall boy" rim?
i need a 12" rim for an early 60s tom and i'm not sure if they are the same or different because i see them advertised under both names.

The rogers tall rims were used pre 1963, along with the bread and butter lugs, the rims were made to accommodate calf heads which stretched more,to keep some rim above the bearing edge.I have seen on these forums some later than 1963 kits have them though.I don't know of a Big R rim specifically,I believe they used the same dimension rims post 1963 swivomatic era through the big R era which started in 1976.If your drum has beavertail lugs that makes it 1963 or later and a regular rim is correct, however if your tom has a tall hoop on it already you might need to find a tall hoop, the difference is pretty noticeable, you can compare with a regular hoop and it is easy to tell.
I agree. Good description/historyThe Big R rims were just later rims....NOT tall at all.
Eames, What difference do you hear in the TALL rims?
I only have one tall rim,a 12" and compared to the rims that came on my Rogers Cleve Dayton set,It is much heavier, and probably a bit stiffer,I don't know if that is due mainly to the extra mass,or if it is thicker like a 2.1mm as compared to a 1.8,but because of it's weight and stiffness I think it could be both.My 12" rogers tom has a long crescent shaped dip in the batter bearing edge centered right between two lugs and the tall rim seemed to help it stay in tune longer,I didn't really notice much of a difference acoustically. However I did move that rim onto an eames 3/8 thick tom on the batter side and it seemed to focus the drum just a tad more, but increased the resonance for some reason.I would be interested to know the thickness of the rogers regular hoops and the tallboys, just to see if my thoughts were correct.
Some don't like the tall rims because they get in the way of the sticks.. They do seem thicker, and the chrome is of incredible quality at this time, I believe.
thanks for the info eames.
ya the one rim that i do have on my 12" tom is definitely taller then any other steel rim i've seen so i guess that would be what i would be looking for. the same on the 16" tom, they are tall rims. luckily i have both of those though.
by the way are you talking about eames the drum maker from mass? i know a lot of people that use eames too. but also i live in mass so i run into them a lot. great drums.
