Hi all
I recently inherited my dad's Supra from 64. SN-14938. It's in REAL BAD shape with massive pitting & flaking of the chrome on the shell. See pic.
Question: Does anyone know of a place that can re-chrome the drum & how much it may cost? it's a family heirloom now so I'm on a mission. Any help greatly appreciated & if anyone knows of a place in SoCal (San Diego preferably) it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
find a reputable motorcyle shop or car shop ask them where they get their chrome work done at.
You don't need the chrome unless you want to be looking at the exact same pitting problem down the line. When you find a local plating shop ask them to strip the old plating and then just polish and clear coat the aluminum shell. You won't be able to see any difference between the polished aluminum and chrome plating. You'll save the re-chroming money and the drum will -never- pit again.

I love this P Shuffle drum.
The polished "ludalloy" is really the best re-finish for the old pitted supras.
Too bad my 2 are not pitted. Wait.............oh that's a good thing.

+1. John. I have my first Supraphonic from 1971 that was in a club fire. The only thing I salvaged. I have seen yours and some other members drum, who have polished the aluminum . Looks great. I want to make the same.

It's a 64' supraphonic and I added COB (Chrome Over Brass) hoops and tube lugs. The drum has nice solid crack when you hit it off center and great tones out on the rims. One of my favorite supras. Contrary to popular belief, some supras do sound better than others. The reason I sank the extra money into saving this one is because it is one of the great sounding ones. It was flaking and very badly pitted all over. The guys at the plating shop made it look brand stinking new for me. It cost me $125. for the stripping job, high-reflection polish and several clear-coats to protect the finish. For me, it was well worth it. I only paid $50 for the drum, I already had the hoops and tube lugs, add the price of the plating shop work and I'm in for $175. on a drum that looks and plays like a million bucks. The bonus is, it'll -never- pit, or flake ever again. Don't bother with re-chroming... it's a complete waste of time and money with these Ludalloy shells. Strip, polish, and clear-coat, that's the way to go to restore them to looking new and having them stay that way.

I have a 64 Supra like this one with the red felt muffler thingy, but my one has none of that flaking, pitting. I pride myself on my Chrome work, hence the name, Chromeo. Not to be mistaken with Chrome Dome. :D
The only way to fix this is to leave the snare with somebody who specializes in chrome work, but be sure to explain that this is a snare drum and those bearing edges need to be flawless.
