I have both drums circa 1965 and the powertone is so much heavier.

What makes the JF such a desirable drum

A Ludwig Jazz Festival was used on the most influential rock and roll recordings and live performances in history: The Beatles'.

Good question. I have a '67 Jazz Fest that I played for about 7 hours last night with my son and it sounded really great. The snare head was tuned very tight, the batter head (a coated CS) was tuned a little above medium and it had a fantastic "woody" tone. It sounded more like a 6.5" snare. Quite enjoyable and, you are quite right, it is oddly light.
