Please help me identify these yammies... Last viewed: 3 days ago

I found this drum kit online. The seller says they are Recording Customs.

They do have high tension lugs and T bars on the kick. But the interior does not seem to be laquered and the Model number on the badge on one of the toms says TT-513GA. And Serial number is JL. This makes them early stage kits according to my catalogs. Can anyone help me out here?

Judging by the grommet marks on the tom badge and lack of badge on the bass drum I think that those are Keller (or some other kind) replacement shells with RC hardware. The original RC shells were darker in colour than those.

These are not Recording Custom shells. Period. I don't know what they are as of yet, but they don't appear to be Keller or straight up birch. The shells are stripped. The badges are from the 5000 series which never carried those lugs (as far as I know). I would steer very clear of this kit, unless it was a gimme.

The seller calls the drums: Yamaha 9000 GA drums. The same thing as the recording custom, but made before they started making the recording customs.

I found another forum that calls them GA (Standard Recording) and says there is a difference is the finish. But they are 100 % birch.

Yeah. They look stripped to me. But they have the RC hardware. And the Stage Series never did. And the Stage Series were also mixed with Mahogany. Which makes it even more comfusing.

Unless he swapped out the badges for the inferior 5000 series, these are not Recording Customs. The shells are not Recording Custom shells. The lugs might be. Maybe.

If the seller has been this "questionable" ... you might want to fish in different waters. Just a thought.

Ive recently bought a old RC kit and after searching the web and confirming with my recources at Yamaha I can say mine are wrapped Standard Recording ''GA'' kit.

From the other forum:

One line had lacquered exteriors and stained interiors-the Recording Customs that we all know. The other line had wrapped shells and unstained interiors. That line was called Standard Recording. The Standard Recording wrapped finishes were black, white and red and matte natural (no wrap). The glossy natural was part of the Recording Customs, since it had a clear lacquered finish. After a couple of years, Yamaha discontinued the Standard Recording line, and just had the Customs.

Check also if the shells have a diagonal seam (from Yamaha's Air Seal System)

It could be the grommets (saving the wood in the badge hole) where damaged and somebody removed.

In the worst case everything BUT the shells are from a Yamaha RC/Standard (same hardware other badge number) so you would have some value to ;)
