Hey folks, new here and was hoping for some expertise. I got this drum with a kit I bought. Was a throw in basically, not from the set. 5X14 6.lug, copper snare,.amd.copper hoops. Had a blackhawk batter head, .thats a gretsch line. I cant find any gretsch with those lugs, but throw off looks similar. Please help.
please help identify this copper snare Last viewed: 3 days ago
Ajax drums(UK),had similar lugs on their snares, though,I'm not convinced that drum is Ajax. I also think it's a brass shell, and not copper. In the triple chrome plating process, copper and white nickel,is first used, before the final layer of chrome is applied.I think that's what you're seeing in the mounting holes.
That strainer, allso looks like an aftermarket generic Asian made one.Try researching Ajax drums.

Its definately copper. I have brass snares and they are morw yellow. This is dark copper. The pics show it lighter than it is. Thanks.
I'm not an expert, but I do know a bit about plating- Brass can be plated with nickle, then chromed. However, steel is first clad in copper, as the nickle doesn't adhere to it. If you see copper, good chance it's steel underneath- just put a magnet on it. Personally, I've never heard of a drum made of copper- too soft. But maybe there's one out there somewhere!
As for the drum itself, I don't recognize the lugs at all, but +1 on that throwoff- it's almost unquestionably an inexpensive Asian piece, most likely Taiwan.
I have a copper shell for one of my Pearl Free Floating Drums. I'm not sure what the drum shell above is but a simple magnet test will determine if it is steel under the exterior chrome. I agree that it looks more Asian than European.
I think it might be a Gorn Drum 1970s or so....
Definitely a budget level style of strainer. I've got like 5 of those from made in taiwan snares.
No idea on whether or not that means anything about the snare though.

I have one.
It's not vintage but it sure is copper. :D
I stand corrected. Still, not a common material for snares by any stretch. I do think I remember copper tympani's and timbale's though... And I wouldn't expect a manufacturer to chrome over a lovely copper shell, but then, I've been wrong before!
