please help identify and date these old premiers Last viewed: 1 day ago

Hi everyone,

could anyone of you date and identify this old premier kit? I did a research through the net, but the best I can estimate is a 70's kit, maybe elite or resonator? I guess the wood is no african mahogany, but is it maple or something else? Pictures below show only the 22 bass and 13 tom, but the kit consists of 22, 13,14 and 16 (with all hardware and 2000 snare included). Any ideas on value?

Thanks a lot!

The drums are birch.

I figure mid to late 70's. Those bass drum spurs were introduced in the mid 70s and the 10 lug bass drums. It has slotted rods on the toms, which changed to square head, if I am not mistaken in the late 70's.

Thanks for the info! Based upon this, I could identify them as being from the 'elite' line of drums. They have a HUGE sound, especially the bass and floor resonate extremely well. I know this finish isn't too fancy, any ideas on value?

Those drums are like the Resonators without the birch inserts. I removed the inserts in my Resonators and they sustain great. Those are really nice drums you have. I think my 13", 14" and 24" are birch, I believe and the floor tom is definitely mahogany. I know my set came all together. Just don't know why they would mix up the wood. Here are my tom shells with the inserts removed. Look and see what you think folks.

Yeah...the sold colors are late 70's-early 80's...

In the 77 catalog...they were pushing the solid colors already...cheaper to buy...that's for sure!

Vibes - it seems quite common for the kits to have been sold with a mixture of birch and mahogany shells

Thanks! I will spend some more time on fine-tuning them this evening, can't wait to hear them with some fresh skins on it!

However... actually, I was already quite some (long) time on the hunt for a 60's jazz kit with a 20" bass (esp. sonor teardrops), untill I bought these premiers. Coincidentally, now I just got them, I got an offer for an (eventual) exchange with a 50's sonor teardrop with 20" kcik... The guy will come to take a look saterday, but any ideas here on quality difference between 60's teadrops and mid-50's sonors? If it were a 60's, I would not hesitate (even though how much I like these premiers... Ah, decisions...!), but for a 50's...? I'm not so sure yet... What would you do in my place? (considering I already got a 22" kit I'm very happy with...)
