Opinions on this 62 slingerland kit. Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Hi

Im looking a purchasing this slingerland kit for my recording studio and was wondering if anyone on here could tell me a bit about it as im a bit of a novice when it comes to these things! I won't have a chance to see it before I purchase and they shop selling it say its a 62 with 13", 16" 22" toms. The drums have been refinished at some point (it looks like its been done well) and the tom legs aren't original.

How much would this be worth? Im getting it fairly cheaply and Im not bothered about the collectors value- Im more concerned about getting a vintage sound for the studio. Anything to be wary or concerned about?

Thanks

Phil

Those slings should get you a nice warm Bassy sound,as long as the shells are in round and edges are good, but if you can't audition them first I would see what the return exchange policy is on the off chance they are a dog.

More like 1968. Chrome "Set O Matic" hardware is a give away plus the badges are still 60's. Could be 69.

Its a rewrap? Unoriginal leg mounts? If there are extra holes in the floor tom Id say $400 for the 3 drums wouldn't be a bad price, but $300 would be better. Looks like a nice player...that is if they are round etc like mentioned above.

Badges and tom mount are probably from 1970 or later.

All hoops and bass drum hoops are incorrect.

Because it's so modded, you never know what the shells are without photos.

60s and 70s Slingerlands in original or close to original condition can be had relatively cheaply...I'd hold out for

something better.

Hi I meant to say thanks for the replies here. I just checked out this kit and the tons sounded pretty good but then I took one of the heads off and there was no date stamp inside. What's more is that the insides of the toms has been painted white. Does this mean that the shells are potentially not original? Did slingerland put strengthing bands in their toms as it has these as well. I'm Suspecting most of this kit is fake? Any ideas? It did sound pretty good tho!

The shells should have reinforcing rings but should not be painted white. Frankly, I'd walk away from this kit.

Well its clearly not a '62, but I don't think the kit is in anyway a fake. just a pieced together kit that's been modded. Slingerlands did have re-rings, and the toms/bass should be painted a cream/tan color per factory durring this era. Looks like a great player, but try to get it cheap, not a lot of resale value with unoriginal parts.

I've been playing drums for years and played all kinds of kits and all kinds of music in small to BIG clubs and I picked up a '63 Slingy 13, 16, 20 about 6 months ago, and I LOVE the tone. Hold out for an ALL original (even beat up in players condition) kit. For the studio I would look for mid 50's to mid 60's.

Thanks for the info- so they did have a period of painting the insides of the shells? I though they all had a date stamp and so got suspicious about the painting.. It's going for £370 here in the uk which is really cheap. Think all original ones can go for more like £1000.

Slingerland did paint interiors a light beige color from October 1966 to some time in 1970, see: http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_3_shells10.html. Slingerland did not paint interiors white, so that is incorrect. My sparkling green pearl kit has this beige paint job, and no date stamps.

I understand that these kits are rare in the UK, so you may not find another soon. And, as you say, you may have to spend much more for one in better condition. That being said, it's your call on this kit. If the sound is what you're looking for and you're comfortable with the price, go for it. Just know that if you ever decide to sell it, you may not get what you paid out of it - due to the alterations...unless you find someone who is just looking for vintage tone and not worried about originality. ;)

Good luck!

Lynn
