Old Slingy Last viewed: 2 days ago

I happened to spot this 12 x 15 "old dog" in a music store while dropping off a drum kit earlier today. Since they were just about giving it away I grabbed it if for nothing more than a nice little display piece in my music room. The pics that I posted show the drum in its "as is" condition as purchased. It's still got all its original hardware on it as well as its calfskin heads, with the bottom head having some sort of "crown" barely visible on it. I'm assuming that it's a Radio King logo, although I've never seen one like it before. I'm more than lilkely going to apply a little Restor-A-Finish to the shell and wooden hoops to clean them up a bit. I've also got a couple questions that I'm hoping someone out there might be able to help me with:

1.) Any idea where I might be able to find some era-correct snare wires (guts?) for this one?; and

2.) Since it doesn't appear that the calfskin heads have ever been removed from the shell, would it be wise NOT to remove them while cleaning the shell for fear that I might not get a proper fit when reinstalling them?

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

As long as the heads aren't going to get wet or be exposed to any radical temperature/humidity changes, they should remain stable long enough for you to detail the rest of the drum. In any event, the hoops will not suddenly change size. Do what you have to do... nice old drum. Love the wood.

For gut snares:

You can also order gut in coil/roll form and cut it to length as needed.

Too many great drums to list here!

These are a bit on the thin side, but you can't beat the price.

I would take the calf skin heads off (and save them), clean, detail, put new heads on it (diplo snare side/fiber batter), new pure sound snare, and ENJOY it. :)

I've been using a polish called 'Liquid Gold' and it's amazing how it revives wood. I use it inside and out.

Look what it did to the inside of my 1930's 28" bass drum.

Calf heads will be no problem to remove & put back on. I buy bulk lengths of gut string from my local tennis shop for peanuts(much cheaper than ebay). Try your local area shop. (BTW, what's your objection to the name "Slingerland" ?, Are you from the San Fernando Valley?)
