old 50s gretsch snare question. Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

Evening guys and gals.

Just purchased an old 50s gretsch kit on craigslist. I don't know much about the older gretsch stuff so I was hoping some of the experts could shine some light.

Have a 4x14 WMP snare, heavily yellowed. 3 ply shell.

However the silver interior looks very sloppy on the bttom edge.

Wasn't sure if this was original.

The drum is in round but there is some minor ply seperation on the top and bottom as seen in the photos. Not sure if this is a death sentence for an old drum like this.

Micro sensitive works, but is pretty beat, bottom hoop and wires non original.

Thanks in advance for the help. If it cleans up nice it will be making the trip with me to the chicago drum show with a few other gems Ive been saving.

The snare is called the Max Roach model I believe. They first came out with tube lugs and I believe they are the rare ones. Yours is still very collectible. If the kit is a 20, 12, 14 with that snare, it was the Progressive Jazz kit

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Very easy repair. I have seen much worse come out ok. Some wood glue, wood filler, clamps and sand paper is all you need.

Awesome snare! The grey sealer paint spillage is typical of these drums. Actually a good indicator the edges are still original if anything. I have a few 50's and 60's Gretsch drums in the stable and they all have the grey paint on the edges. Look like a 3 ply ass well. So more likely than not it is a 50's Gretsch.

Nice one - even thought it does not have the original resonant hoop - it's still very nice. 50's Gretsch 3ply snare drums are sought after drums....good score.
