Hi folks,

On the link below, the 4th photo under LIVE KITS is Phil Collins in overalls. This is his LAMB live kit.. all the way on the right about half way up is a tuned percussion instrument. The tines are very small. This is not a good picture but I have no idea what this is. Can anybody please shed some light on what this instrument is?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Isn't that the xylophone phil plays a solo on in "no self control"?

I believe the resonator tubes are too long to be a xylophone. While a few high end marimbas have symmetrical tube layouts, that is generally the set-up you see on a vibraphone. Of course that is assuming I am looking at the correct piece.

Ohhhh I see what your talking about. In the pic of him in overalls. Behind him is a Glockenspiel or also known as Concert bells. I have some nice ones made by Pearl. Very high pitched metallic bell sound.

I thought we were talking about the photo in B/W with Peter Gabriel to stage right in the leather jacket. In the background you can make out some long, symmetrically arc'ed resonator tubes. Those would belong to either a high dollar marimba or a set of vibes. Could be the concert bells were are curious about though.

I am pretty definitely sure the mallet instrument is a Vibraphone by the shape of the resonator, and the bars are all even. Marimba and Xylophone sharp's bars are raised higher than the natural bars or notes.

Thanks guy... but I am referring to the photo with Phil in his overalls. The instrument in question is cut off by the border on the right side slighter south of middle.

Could be my eyes but seems the tines are very thin and not layed out like a standard piano... if the tines are as thin as I think must be tough to play single notes cleanly... at the top of the instrument, there appears to be the end of the striker (thin wood handle).

Anyway, this is the instruement in question. I don't think I have ever seen anything like this before? Oh and does anyone have a tuneable 6 inch tambourine as well? I have a 12 and a 10... need the 6 or 8 to complete all three.

Thanks,

Jim
