New Vistalite Day Last viewed: 5 days ago

Well, this is a pretty cool score. Story starts back in high school (20ish years ago). My junior and senior years of HS, I had free periods in the morning. If you had good grades, you could come in late to school if you had a free period first thing in the morning. I did not have good grades, so I worked out a deal with the music teacher, who's music theory class I WAS doing well in, to spend my mornings in the auditorium where there were a couple of guitar amps and this old Ludwig Vistalite kit. So I would grab my breakfast, head to the auditorium and jam out to start my day. A nice way to start the day.

Fast forward to last fall and I was doing sound for my middle school music teacher's band, who had taken over teaching at the High School after the other guy had retired. On a whim, I asked him if the Vistalites were still around. He said they'd been sitting in a closet collecting dust since shortly after he had taken over. Then he asked me if I wanted to buy them. Well, we had just had another baby, and I didn't have a lot of spare cash lying around. He just said "Think about it and let me know." So I'm having a pretty good summer financially, so I shot him an email and made an offer. He was glad to have them out of his way and that they were going to a good home.

Coolest thing was, when I made an offer, I was thinking that it was a 5 piece kit with a chrome snare. I had no idea all those toms were there and the ORIGINAL SNARE! The 12" tom has a pretty good crack running the depth of the shell. The 15" is cracked just right around the support. I think both are probably fixable. Need to do some more reading up on that process.

Wow! That a cool story. 20 years ago, would you have ever thought you would be playing those same drums again, let alone be the owner.

They knew you would return someday. :) This is a perfect example of karma.

Definitely wouldn't have thought it. I had sold my gigging kit (DW's) a while back since I wasn't gigging anymore. I had decided I would get another kit when I found a good deal on a set of vintage Ludwigs. Not exactly what I had in mind, but I'm certainly not complaining! :)

Any Vista experts out there know what kind of outfit these sizes made up? I can't find anything similar in any catalogs online. The sizes are:

22x14, 12x8, 13x9, 15x12, 16x14, 16x16, 14x5 snare. I believe all the toms are mounted aside from the 16x16.

Thanks buddy! Amazing that I could eat a bacon, egg and cheese bagel every morning back then and not gain any weight. I think I still have a VHS of us performing at graduation. I forget what we did. Some REM tune and maybe a Billy Joel tune? Ah, those were the days, my friend! You should come over the house and check them out. Help me build a laundry list of what I'll need for any restoration!
