Hey Guys,
I'm a new member here, and just got my first drum set! I've wanted a set for years, and finally decided to take the splurge. I have a 1970 Slingerland 4 piece set. It's a 14x22 bass drum, 14x16 floor tom, and a 13" rack tom.
It came with 2 snares. The first is a 14x8 maple one which matches the set. It's quite an unusual one with 16 lugs, and has a deep sound. I really like it. The second is a 10 lug 5.5x14 aluminum snare from around 1974. That guy's been really tweaked to the previous owner's liking. It has a white wrap, a Rhythmtech active snare system and a black Remo Falams II batter head. It seems like a nice snare, and I enjoy using it for things like CCR, etc. It's punchy and projects well.
The set came with a 14" high hat, and a 20" crash ride. I then added a 20" Zildjian pang and 18" Zildjian sizzle crash. All my cymbals are 60s / early 70s Zildjian, before the big black logos.
I also added Remo Roto-toms, which I really like! So, as you can see, it's definitely a very 70's set! It suits my style though, which is anything from Gino Vannelli, ELO, Supertramp, Piink Floyd, or folkier stuff like Carole King, Joni Mitchell, etc.
Except for the metal snare, all the drums have "California Custom Drums" heads on them. I haven't been able to find out anything about this company. Is anyone familiar with these heads? To me, they look like Remo. I'm wondering if Remo made them for the California Drum Shop in Bethlehem PA? If anyone can shed any light on these heads, I'd appreciate it. I'm certainly happy with how they sound. I have a pic of the logo close up.
Any questions, feel free to ask!
