Need some help figuring out which bass drum I have... Last viewed: 3 days ago

So I recently visited a drum yard sale and found this barren bass drum shell, 22" x 14" with holes for 10 lugs per side, and bass drum spurs. No holes for mounting hardware nor any holes for a cymbal attachment. Dated inside the shells March 14th, 1968. The shell is a three ply shell which looks like mahogany, maple, mahogany with maple reinforcement rings.

I'm dead sure this is some kind of Slingerland based on the 2 1/4" lug screw spacing and the outline from where the lugs used to be. The only question is which series? The catalog doesn't offer much help because according to the 1968 catalog all the outfits were 20" bass drums.

Any ideas which series this could be? Also, P-040 was stamped inside the shell, so this was a Capri Pearl finish.

Anyone know what this was?

Pictures are the key to identity.

A "P" stamped on the inside is a good indication of being a Slingerland shell as they stamped the insides with a "P" if the shell was intended to be wrapped (P for pearl). I don't think that the 040 refers to a particular wrap though. Not sure what you mean by

"series" as Slingerland (and Ludwig, and Gretsch each) only made one type of shell at the time and used it for everything so regardless of what outfit it might have come with it would be the same drum.

BTW if it's a Slingerland the middle ply is poplar, not maple.

Again pictures would go along way to helping solve the mystery.

Your bass drum appears to be from the "Sound King" series of drums. The SK series of bass and toms were used for pretty much all kits with double row of lugs. Center-mounted lugs on toms and bass were Stage Band series, although my 1969 catalog refers to them as "Standard Model" for toms and "Artist" series for bass.

As previously posted, the "P" is for a wrapped drum. Never really figured out the "040" designation, though. But I can assure you that it did not specify a particular wrap, as you can find "P-040" shells with just about any wrap Slingerland offered at the time.

Same shells for sound kings and stage bands though, just drilled differently.
