Need Help With A Leedy Double Tom Mount Last viewed: 1 day ago

Loading...

I've got a Leedy Ray Mosca kit from 1963 with a 14x20 bass, two 8x12 rack toms and a 16x16 floor tom.

Both toms have the clip-on diamond plates and the kit came with its original Leedy double tom post and bass mount.

The issue I've got with the post is that when the toms are mounted, the assembly shifts (or swings) slightly right and left even though the screw on the bass mount plate that holds the post is tightened as much as possible.

Has anyone experienced this same problem and/or does anyone know how to resolve it? I did notice that one of these Slingerland/Leedy posts recently sold on e-Bay that had some sort of wooden piece installed near the bottom of the post. I had no idea what it's purpose was and thought that it might have been some repair that was done to the post. It looked quite strange to be quite honest about it. Nevertheless, now I'm wondering if its purpose was to stabilize the post so that no shifting or swinging would occur once the toms were mounted. It seems like a bizarre way to correct the problem but I can't think of any other reason that it would have been installed in that area.

As usual, any "words of wisdom" would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS!

I just took a closer look at the mount and the post. The area that's shifting or swinging somewhat right & left is the area where the top of the post enters the bottom of the circular mount. Please see the pic that I've just attached. THANKS!

The Slingerland / Leedy double mount we sent out with a squashed rubber tube that went over the pole and "supported" the two toms.

These were often lost, and not even shown it the catalog, as technologically they were a cheap and primitive solution. Typical Slingerland.

The ratchet that the tom mounts are on is the same as the ratchet used on their flat base snare stands. They always had (have) "play" back and forth...no solution.

If this tom mount bothers you and you want to correct it without modifying the drums, and have few bucks to spend, here's a solution...

Get a zoomatic tom mount ball / rod thing. Get the one made for the free standing tom stands, as the tube is round and doesn't have the dimple like the ones made for the regular bass mounts.

This rod / ball will fit into the plate on your bass.

Get setomatic tom mounts for your toms. The use the same hole spacing as the diamond plates. Don't drill the extra hole for the tom rod...not needed. Get the stubby Slingerland double setomatic tom mount and put it on the bass drum pole / ball. Now you're all set.

If you really want to go nuts, get a super setomatic block, and put two double mounts in each hole and use them as single tom mounts.

Got it???

Here's an idea for some of the parts
