My Rogers drum kit (1960s I think..) Last viewed: 3 hours ago

I'm looking for some help identifying and dating my Rogers drum set. I bought it used 15 years ago for around $100. I play and record with it once in a while. I never really gave much thought to it being vintage or valuable.

Recently I started researching it; and based on the logo badge and hardware I'm thinking that it's from the mid 60s.

It has the beavertail lugs, and the script logo badge, also the floor tom legs look right.

The serial number on the floor tom is 43857, and the label says made in USA, but it doesn't have a model. The kick and rack tom have unfortunately been spray painted black on the inside (including the serial number label and hardware)!!! I tried to remove the black paint from the serial number label on the 12" tom, and it started to come off, but so did the writing on the label :(

The previous owner (with the great spray painting ideal) also removed the front lugs and hoop from the kick. I replaced them with whatever they had lying around at the store. I also added spurs (bad job by me, making new holes in the drum)

Another bad job by me....I threw away the 12" tom ten years ago!!! I used all the lugs from it to replace the broken ones on the 13" and 16" toms. Im kicking myself now. I've always just played it as a 4 piece with my vintage Slingerland snare. Wish it was still a 5 piece.

Anyway.... can someone tell me what year these might be, and what model?

I'd love to know what they might be worth in their condition. I have no intention of selling them, but if they're valuable I might look into restoring the correct hardware.

Thanks,

Steve

Based on the paper label (likely said 9/72 at one point) and the cast collets, I think this is from 1972-1976 (before the Big R hardware).

$100 was a great bargin. Likely a Londoner 5 set.

Exactly right: the little 9/72 tags came along in late 1972 and were used until the Big R badges and Memriloc hardware were introduced in late 1975.

That's a nice drum kit, too bad about the spurs since that really hurt the value - but still a great set for what you paid. You could find another 12" tom from that era for not too much money.

The '9/72' on your tag was probably on the corner that was torn off.

That setup was called the 'Londoner', and the drums standard sizes were 22-12-13-16.

Your Fullerton set is late 1974 to 1975, last of the Swivomatic 9/72 series before Rogers' transition to the Big R series with MemriLoc hardware. First production of the 9/72 series had underlined serial numbers. Around 1973 the serial numbers had an "A" prefix before the number, and then a "B" prefix around 1974. The last of the series (like yours) had no underline and no prefix letter. Rogers' application of interior labels was not precise or consistent, so dating is not an exact science.

The black, or Ebony, wrap was very common at the time thereby making this finish not super desirable by collectors. Your original bass drum hoops would have been wood with matching Ebony inlay (not Silver Glass inlay like the earlier 9/72s). With the modifications and alterations aside, you have a great set for $100!

Thanks, guys! That's the info I needed, though not exactly what I wanted to hear. My friend told me they were 70's or 80s. Recently I got the idea they might be 60s based mostly on the logo. Glad to know the truth.

Since they're not really collector grade, there's probably no point in replacing inaccurate hardware. I bought new coated emperor heads for the toms yesterday. I'll probably just put a Rogers logo head on the kick and get to playing 'em.

Cheers!
