my rewrap of my pearl "glass'" kit Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Loading...

hello VDF I've been here before. I have a old pearl kit (Fiberglass) with a 13" wood tom. the best part is my Slingerland Radio King Snare (1950"s). Well with the Snare being Blue Sparkle I've been looking for a wrap that was close or right on. Well I found Jammin Sams. with his help and my money (lol) I rewrapped my rather bah hum bug kit. ( It orignaly was a red sparkle, it had faded badly. so the previous owner removed the wrap and PAINTED IT SILVER AND BLACK STRIPPED !!!) I really didn't like the color choice but I was desperate for a kit that I could afford and fix as I go!.

I chose Deep Blue Glass Glitter, It was the closest thing to what my snare was wrapped with. dispite the 60 years age difference and the snare is a Sparkle and the wrap is Glitter. When the light is right it matches and when the isn't right it really does show a difference. Again age and ones a sparkle and the other is a glitter !! I'm going to try and put some pictures on this thread thanks for time you took to read my post.

Snare really does seem to match the the other drums. Nice choice of wrap.

Is the kit wood-fiberglass or all fiberglass.

the kit is fiberglass the only drums that are wood are the snare of coarse, the 13" tom is wood. I have no Idea what kind of wood the tom is. The guy I bought the kit from thru it in later, for $20.00 more. He's the one that removed the old wrap and put the paint job on the kit, which I was never very fond of. As you can tell It looks very good now compared to the way it looked before putting the wrap on. It even sounds better since putting on the wrap! I've changed the heads on the toms to Aquarian Studio X's (coated) then for a resonet head I chose Aquarian Hi-Frequance heads. They work well for a resonet head and I chose Black to match the front of the bass drum!! You can almost always see those heads on my upper toms the floor tom no one will see it.

Hey thanks for asking I'm very fond of this kit now. It has a much better apperance now. Too me it's as nice as some of the new kit's out there. I'd put it up agaisnt my buddies DW Champagne Sparkle kit, my old pearl kit looks as nice if not better than his DW. The Glitter is bigger than the Sparkle and brighter.

Nice job. If the 13" is a Pearl, it is likely a Luan shell. Is the woodgrain vertical or hjorizontal...and is the color of the wood light (i.e. blonde) or dark ?

the wood grain runs vertical, the color is a light color, it seams to be a single layer (one piece as apposed to haveing plies of wood). I'm not sure if it is a Pearl? The guy I bought it from said it was a Pearl, he'd takin the badges off to paint it to match the rest of the kit. There are NO MARKS OR MARKING inside the shell to verify or show it's a Pearl shell. I just had to take the guys word for it that it is a Pearl tom.

It is a 13 X 10 3/4. which I do believe it would be considered a 13"x11". The wrap cost me more for that drum. The kits they offered was for a 22"x14",12"x8",13"x9",16"x16". the other kit was: 24x16,12x10,13x11,18x16. Well that one drum cost me $30.00 extra because of it demensions  It's a good sounding drum, even more so now that it has a wrap on it again!!Jump For Joy

thanks for asking it a pleasure to be on this site.

I've made a mistake on the wood tom it does have plies of wood looks like five plies, but it's probably four plies it is hard to tell from the paint, that's still on the outside of the shell!! I replaced the heads that were on it, I looked real close then and said ops!!;) the color is blondish. hope that tells more about the wood tom. I've replaced the top head with Aquarian Studio X coated. The resonet head I'm using a Aquarian High Frequency black. It has a very rich deep sound now, compared to the Remo coated Ambassador's and Yamaha resonet head (made by Remo for Yamaha). It lacked the deepness it has now, plus I've tuned them as loose as I can get them and still keep tension on the tension rods and keep the head flat on the bearing egde. the other heads were very tightly tuned it almost made them sound dead, there was no resonet to them they couldn't move, TO TIGHT:2Cents:Well ok guys hope that's betterLoLoLoLo

That tom is actually 3 ply, if it has the lighter wood interior ply. Andit is mahogany. Not all of the mahog Pearls are reddish in color. Would you mind postind a pic of the interior please? I have a unique older 4 ply that has one thin maple interior ply that is an old stencil...haven't figured out what to do with it yet...

I have to replace the tension rods and the lug inserts on that drum when I get the parts in from Jammnin Sam's and get it apart again I will post some pictures back up on this thread. right now the drum is back together and being played. But that stuff will need to be fixed to correctly tune that puppy. I"ve had to use teflon tape on the tension rods to get them to stay in the inserts . The rods are too short and the inserts are to short. didn't have any problems till I went and put the Aquarian high Freq. head on the bottom of the drum. Jammin sams tells every one that uses there wrap kit that some heads will be very tight on the shell!! well had to trim off the outer layer of the wrap where it over laps!! Still very tight, thats when the rods and inserts started messing up. As soon as I have some pic's I'll post them.

thanks
