My new RK

Hi,

Just recently acquired this lovely old single ply Duco 14"X7.5" RK. Seems to be all present and correct although as you can see, the paint is quite badly chipped in some areas. I've already stripped off the hardware for a good a clean and will also clean up the shell before re-assembly. I've decided not to re-spray the Duco finish on this shell like I did with my Broadway and keep it 100% original. The vendor estimated it was c1939 - does this seem about right?

Nice! I like the chipped duco look myself, kinda along the same lines as the "relic'd" guitars that people are paying extra for these days. Nothing says mojo like a drum that was obviously gigged! Is this one 3ply or single?

Nice single-ply model. Luckily although the shell does show some neglect, the drum looks very original with no unwanted extra holes etc.

Greard really nice drum~! Congrats. Single ply shells are sweet. I'd love to have a early cloud badge RK one day myself. I intend too!! Enjoy and good call leaving the duco original. As they say it's only original once.

Nice drum Gerard, and an uncommon sight over here. Have you read, or thought about, clear lacquering the shell to preserve the paint? I'll have the same decision to make with my Leedy Broadway when it arrives and have read that this is a viable option. Any thoughts? I like the worn duco look but also want to stop further flaking.

I played a 14x7 once and the sound was incredible. Sure this ain't 14x7 not 14x7.5? Its a beauty.

Here's a better picture of the strainer. There is no internal muffler installed. How did the pre-1940s snares differ from the early 40s drums?

Hi Andrew. Not seen much about the clear lacquer option but I wondered whether there are any guitar builders in the area who might be able to advise on this type of thing? Not aware of any new drum makers in the Auckland region!
