My first Rogers Cleveland Kit!!! Blue Onyx 20-12-14!!! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Saw this on Guitar Center online and even with the extra-holes I could not resist!!! Paid $912.00 shipped with new heads from Massachusetts to Arizona.

The good:

Blue Onyx Wrap and Chrome is in really great shape! Just a few very very slight cracks on the bottom of the kick.

14 inch Cleveland Floor Tom!!!

All of the original parts are present minus 1 bass drum hoop and 1 t-rod and claw.

Extra 12 inch Flat Grey Dayton Blue Onyx tom. This is also bad because my guess is the previous owner tried to make his own Top Hat kit and that is how the extra swivo and Ludwig Mount ended up on the drum

Great Edges on all drums

The bad:

Lots of extra holes for different mounts on kick

Swivo mounts on toms replaced by Ludwig. No extra holes but the original holes were made wider to accept Ludwig tom mount.

The questions:

1. What year are these suckers? The tags are as follows:

Kick Drum: Cleveland Tag # 11091 Holiday Typed

Floor Tom: Cleveland Tag # 59301 Holiday Not Typed

Rack Tom: Cleveland Tag # 53925 Holiday Not Typed

Rack Tom: Dayton Tag # 81432 Holiday Not Typed Flat Grey Paint

2. What catalog kit was this originally? From what I can tell there was only 1 original collet mount on the top of the kick drum for the rack tom mount. Was there a model that came with out a cymbal mount on the kick?

3. Most importantly what is the best way to care for the Onyx wrap to keep it from cracking?

And now the pics!

Great kit, Congrats! I'd just start with a damp micro-fibre cloth and hot water. Follow with a dry MF. If that gets all the grime. Wax and call it good.

Still grime, next step is Windex/Water 50/50. Better results on the shell polish if the hardware is removed.

Nothing special here but I like them.

Those look great Derek, nice score! The wrap looks great in the photos. I would agree with Creighton on a light cleaner at first and then follow up with any type of good polish or wax. I would probably go ahead and remove all hardware first for best results. Have fun!

Excellent score! The floor tom alone was a $1000 drum not too long ago. In that finish, it's probably still worth a lot. And they are the sweetest drums too. Great deal. Enjoy.

Thanks guys! I knew I couldn't really lose on the deal with the floor tom. I was pleasantly surprised how nice the chrome and wrap were. I have seen some really trashed Onyx wraps. Plus I think about 50 percent of my kits have been cursed with the deadly Ludwig diamond plate addition so I am getting used to having that eye sore on my vintage drums!

Mount on left is original. This would be a Citation set up. 2nd Swivo possibly was added in the 70s, it is a Fullerton cast tensioner, and the collet is different. The Ludwig, unknown. I don't know the age of that mount. The floor tom makes value on this... and they are Rogers. Nice drums.

Can`t add any more to Ploughman`s observations as he`s right on as per usual and a top notch Rogers expert on this forum.I just want to congratulate you on your most excellent purchase!I started playing Rogers Clevelands/Daytons in 1967 and still have them to this day. They were "THE BEST" drums in their time and they still hold that reputation in vintage drums with today`s market.Enjoy those fantastic drums and again congrats on your first Rogers Clevelands...

Thanks again for the insight and congrats. Just threw a quick tune on em and man do they sound sweet! Really digging the sound of the kick. Really full and punchy compared to my other 20's.

'65/66, and as Ploughman says, a Citation model that eventually became the Citadel in 67/68 catalog.

Look at both the 64 and 67/68 catalogs on the link to Vintage Drum Guide to identify. I would guess both the added mounts are late sixties because of the plastic T handle on the Ludwig mount, cast collet on the swivo mount and the fact that the use of double toms was on the increase in that era.

You made a really good buy and right in my back yard! Of course, I'm not living in my back yard right now so you beat me to it. Danvers or Worcester? But as I had mentioned before, GC ships free and someone should be trying to get that red onyx Dayton kit in the midwest!!!

Also, it wouldn't eventually be that hard to find matching bass and tom without extra holes. The prime piece is now the floor tom. The bass with only a single tom mount is pretty well sought after too if they haven't been introduced to Black & Decker.

Did you get the Powertone snare with it as well?
