Mounting Tuneable Tambourines Last viewed: 2 days ago

Loading...

I am not a bonafide drummer and am dangerous because I know a little bit about alot of drum stuff so I have a question for you experts.

I have 3 vintage ludwig tuneable tambourines (8, 10 and 12 inch) and want to mount all three on one drum stand so that I can play these as part of the kit almost like a snare tambourine (that is, play them with sticks).

I don't know that much about stands and mounts either so does anybody have some information on how I can mount these three tambourines on the same stand?

Thanks for your expertise,

Jim

It would probably have to be a custom made rig! I've never heard of a tambourine set-up like the one you suggest. I hope you find something! I'm curious to see what you eventually come up with.

I'm a big Stanton Moore fan. If you look under the hi-hat in the photo of my kit, you'll see a Brazilian instrument called a Pandiero. It's a tunable tambourine that can be played with sticks! Mine is a 13" with a calf-skin head tuned just below my 12" rack tom. It sits in a snare stand. I play a ton of New Orleans second-line rhythms on it in combination with the floor tom, rack tom, or snare. The jingles on the Pandiero makes it sound like there is an entire drum corp. coming down the street. Love the sound of it and I find it useful in a lot of situations.

If you haven't experimented with them yet, I recommend to all kit drummers to incorporate a tambourine or Pandiero for a bit. It's not only a ton of fun to play, but the range of new sounds it offers gives new life to old licks and real spice to new tricks. Try one you'll like it! I'm hooked. The Pandiero is now a regular part of my kit and I use it when it's appropriate to the music.

Good luck with your tambourine rig! I'll be watching the thread to see what you turn up!

Best,

You might look into a standard tom or floor tom mount as well. Odds are they will be too tall for your application. Yamaha makes a floor tom mount with horizontal bolts that would probably work but I bet they are expensive.

Another thought would be to simply use a bass drum mount cowbell holder but use the rim clamp to clamp to the tambourine shell from underneath. That would essentially give you a post sticking straight out from the shell. There are plenty of multi clamps available that would handle that post.

You could try using a Ludwig standard bass drum spur mount. It should fit through the large hole on the tambourine. A 70s double tom mount would work as the L arms should slide through the spur mts. No drilling.

That's just pure genius!

Squint, you too... you guys always impress the hell out of me with the stuff you come up with. Bright, creative solutions.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.

Please visit this custom web page to review some photos of the kit I am trying to recreate....

It would be Phil Collins big large LIVE kit, scroll down the page a bit and you can see the tambourines mounted under the timbales. There are a couple of different views (front, side and top) of the mounted tambourines. How are these mounted?

Thanks,

Jim

Jim - it looks like all three are on a single stand!? I have never seen one like that. He may have had it custom made. Track down an email address for him or his office and ask him! Who knows, lightning might strike and you'll get a response. But I have never seen one of those triple-tambourine stands myself.

Actually, I have a relationship with most of the guys from Genesis but Phil is pretty much a recluse now. Non of the other GENESIS guys have any idea how Phil did what with his drums.

So, I am only asking here for a similar solution from you guys (experts compared to me) on how I could go about creating a similar mounting system for the three tambourines?

Any suggestions will help.

Then ask them who Phil's drum-tech was! You know Collins wasn't setting up his own kits... somebody out there, some roadie, knows exactly what he was using. That's the guy you want to talk to.
