Mid 1970s Slingerland snare Last viewed: 17 minutes ago

Hi all,

Just finished cleaning up this 5x14 mid 70s Sound King COB (magnet doesn't like it) and I'm really pleased with the results! Before and after pics are below. All components are original. The card in the picture is the original warranty card from Slingerland, which may suggest this instrument maybe have never actually been owned (dare to dream, I know). There was also a faded price tag on it. Also in the pics is a close up of the scratch patterns that were around every hole on the outside of the shell, which I thought a bit odd.

I tried a couple of heads on the gigs with it this weekend and surprisingly, an Evans coated 2-ply sounds great on it with a small drumdot to calm the ring just a bit. The tone cuts really well in the mids with just a little bit of body to fill it out. A great rock snare with decent sensitivity on quieter passages (especially in a bigger, lively room) and a fantastic cross stick sound, and just look at that fat Zoomatic!

I have about $45 total into this instrument - very happy :)

Nice score! The "scratches" appear to be cracks in the chrome, but you love the sound thats what matters.

Thank you!

Great job on the refinish, what did you use to clean it up?

I would surmise that the "scratch patterns" around the holes are mini-stress cracks in the chrome that come from the pressure of the lug against the shell as well as the torque applied to that area from tension of the rods to the hoops. I have not seen this before in chrome but I have seen something like this in a few of the duco finishes.

Once again, nice job Clapping Happy2

Thanks! 3 simple stages of cleaning: one pass with Windex and paper towels for the easy top layer, one pass with "NevrDull" chrome cleaner (learned about that product from this forum), and one pass of very fine steel wool and Windex with no pressure under hand, just lightly moving it over the surface to remove the bumpy stragglers that would cooperate.

Thanks all for the kind words and advice - cheers!
