Mexican Drum Shops

Loading...

About five hours ago, I returned from a two week visit to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I've visited this beautiful city about thirty times and each time I make a point of trying to locate music stores which carry drums and percussion instruments. This year, I came across a dingy little hole in the wall which sold some pretty cool stuff. In the back of the store I stumbled upon a set of Ludwig Accents. They were dusty and out of tune. Even the decal badges were curling. I tried to ask about the drums in poor Spanish but, the shop owner knew nothing about the origin of the kit. I know very little about Ludwig drums except that I'd love to own a vintage kit. These drum looked to me to be VERY entry level. I honestly don't even think they were made in the U.S.A. My guess would be China or Taiwon. Say it ain't so! I know that even Ludwig outsources nowadays but, an entire set?! Please tell me I'm wrong.

Brian I'm pretty sure Accent is currently Ludwigs beginner series of drums. You didn't miss out on anything!

I guess their "Accent" wasn't good enough? (ba-da-bump)

I think American-made Ludwigs today begin with the Keystone series, as the most affordable ($1500+), then the Classics, then the Legacy.

Accent=China

Don't feel bad, before I knew what Accents were, I saw a Ludwig tom for cheap and bought it. Accent.

It did have hardware on it that I used.

I bought a set for electronic Pearl heads.

Snares have no beds.

I bet with a little custom work, they could sound OK.

We vacation in PV a couple of times a year. Where was the shop - Old Town? I have seen a couple of shops, but nothing very interesting for me. Not much market money for them.

There is a Mexican drum maker that uses similar style turret lugs as old Camco and current DW style. Cannot remember the brand name.

The shops that I visited this time were south of the Rio Cuale in Zona Romantica. I can't remember the streets. On the whole, I saw some pretty cool bongos (LP) and congas as well as various percussion pieces. Quite often we stay in the Old Town area around Hotel Rosita. I did see some pretty fair snare drummers in mariachi bands. These guys really are pretty good for the music they do. PV is a beautiful city. Good to hear from someone who visits!
