Matching snare dilemma -- keep or sell?

Loading...

Hey guys,

I'm picking up a used Yamaha maple custom absolute kit in silver sparkle finish. So, here's the deal. The guy is including the matching silver sparkle 7x14 maple snare with it. I currently have the Elvin Jones signature snare, which is the same size but in gold sparkle with wood hoops (I'm a fan of the wood hoops). I have plenty of other snares too, but my thing is, since these two snares are the same size and are both maple, one of them probably should be sold. It's a tough decision, since I'm kind of attached to my Jordan, Anton, and Elvin signature drums...each of them are so great.

Given the fact that this kit is silver sparkle, would you:

a) Keep the matching silver sparkle snare 7x14, and sell the Elvin snare.

Or...

b) Keep Elvin, because who needs a matching snare anyways, because it's the Elvin Jones signature snare drum and it's cooler than dirt...thus selling the silver sparkle snare.

Thoughts?

why sell either one ? They are after all, two different drums, and are going to have two different sounds? You may find you prefer one over the other, or that you love them equally.

This is true. It's possible that they each have a different ply thickness...and therefore a different sound. Maybe I'll keep both! I like the Elvin drum so much, I don't think I can part with it now!

In fact, I just confirmed that the Elvin is 7-ply, while the regular maple absolute snare is 6-ply (based on Yamaha web site). So, this probably will make them sound a bit different...and of course the Elvin has wood hoops. In other words, I may need to keep both!

Keep 'em both. Learn what makes them different, and why you would want to use one over the other for a given situation...
