Lyon & Healy cleaned up

I picked this up on eBay a month or so ago. I was going to paint it but decided to leave it with the worn metal look. I did remove the black lacquer paint on the hoops. I put a coat of Tung Oil on them.

I tucked a NOS calfhide on the snare side (Slingerland still in the box pictured) and a calfhide on the batter - both on the original wood flesh-hoops.

The snare gut is 11 guage from Cooperman. They're tempermental to install but worth it in the end.

I will trim the gut snares when I finish tightening them - it takes a few days to do that properly.

Everything is working so far - the strainer, snares and thumbscrew lugs. It sounds like a deep ole snare drum...just like it should.

I'm still working on adjusting the snares. Gut snares take a while to straighten out and settle into the drum. Here's what they look like as of yesterday.

The sticks came with a G.S. Knapp snare drum that will likely be my next project. I don't know how old the sticks are but they may be 100+yrs. The Knapp drum they came with was made in 1884.

Thanks people - but I really didn't do very much to it.

- Cleaned the shell and strainer parts carefully

- took the old gummed up black lacquer off the wood hoops and put some Tung Oil on them - didn't even sand the nicks out of them. I wanted the drum to keep it's age/charm.

- bought 8 era correct (seller said they're from an old L&H drum) lugs.

- bought new gut and I'm still fooling with it so it will seat/conform to the head

- tucked a NOS thin calfhide head on the snare-side and an older calfhide head on the batter. Both heads tucked onto the flesh-hoops that came with the drum.

The drum is playable.
