I have a question for the experts...
Maybe some of the CT people have seen this already, but there is a '73 Vistalite in blue for sale at the local Sam Ash for $999; been there for quite a while, and they just can't seem to get rid of it. It's in very good shape. Not listed online anymore, so unfortunately I can't pull up a picture of it, but..
I was there yesterday getting some random stuff and finally inquired about it. Eric, the drum dept manager, said that it was sold for something like $1500 out of a different Sam Ash, and the customer returned it as defective, because the tom mount was actually off to the right side (if facing the kit), so they took it back at the New Haven store and dropped the price of it by 500 bucks and are now trying to get rid of it. I had suggested that it was possibly a virgin bass drum and the mount was added later on, but even Eric said that if it was a virgin drum, the badge would be centered, and the badge is actually lined up with the off-center mount. (Drums are up high so I never noticed this anomaly). The seam is dead center bottom and the spurs are in the correct place and there is no evidence of filler or modification.
So - is it possible these were a straight-up defect from the factory in 73? Could something like that seriously pass even Ludwig's quality control? Or is it more probable that this was a 3-piece configuration and the second rack tom was added later?
