Any opinions on the sound of metal (possible acrolite finish) Ludwig Standard snare drums? I've searched the forum, but have come up with very little as far as what drummers think of their sound. I don't have a pic, but would you consider one of these with very few nicks or scratches, original stand and case, for $50, a good deal? Thanks for any input.

I have a couple. I think they are good drums and can sound as good as an acrolite if you tune it up right.
Great drums. Maybe one of the most underrated drums out there.

I've got one metal and three wood Standards, along with a bunch of Acro's (and way too many other snares). Get it, that's a deal... You'll like it!
I have one. It's an acro minus the center bead and with different lugs. Maybe it's better than an acro with, in the words of the Slingerland catalog, "no sound disturbing center bead".
Saw one of the chrome ones in a Music Go Round last night for $30. It was beat though. Chrome was starting to flake off just like on a Supra.
The Standard Acorlite is a wonderful sounding drum! I've had quite a few over the years and even have one in my collection that I've had the shell anodized in blue. Looks really cool!

Thank you all for the feedback. I have a few irons in the fire, so to speak, now I need to decide where to spend (and convince my wife I "need" another drum).

Outside of some super steal garage sale find on something really special you'd be very hard pressed to find a better sounding snare for $50 (or even $100) than one of these. Heck the P-83 throw-off that these used is probably worth a good chunk of the fifty by itself if it's in decent shape.
Given how cheap you can pick them up everyone should own at least one Acro and/or the Standard variation (or, like me, both).
They are indeed great sounding drums. $50 is a great price. I have one and, in fact, it was my very first drum from fifth grade band.
