Ludwig Standard 14x14 Floor Tom Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

I just picked up this orphan Standard 14x14 floor tom. White interior with APR 14 xxxx date stamp. Serial number puts this in the year 1969. This looks like it was part of the S-300 kit listed in the catalog.

The wrap is solid and without cracks, but it has some swirling fade. Hardware has very minor surface tarnish, which should clean up. Everything is original, but the top head. Bottom head is a Ludwig Weather Master, but someone put electrical tape all over the entire bottom. I might be able to pull it off. Legs are original too.

Is this Blue Mist that has turned/faded to an aquamarine or was there an actual Aquamarine wrap? Close up pictures look green, but it's really more of an aqua color.

I'm going to clean it up and install some new Ambassadors, but not sure what I'll do with it yet.

This is the Chris Partridge (Partridge Family) color. Weird that closeup does look green.

That kit is on my long term want list. Would love to have this 14" to go with it.... 2 up 2 down w/matching snare. Then get a copy of the logo for the bass drum head from Bermuda...Point me in the direction of Albuquerque somebody..

Interesting to know the Partridge Family color connection.

Here's a current kit on ebay:

The bass and tom tom are similar to the color of my floor tom.

The Silver and Blue mist wraps seemed to change color over time more than the gold and red did (or maybe it just isn't as noticeable on those two). The blue was more or less the same color as regular blue sparkle originally (although with smaller sparkles and these wraps were thinner overall) but often has turned aqua or even green in the ensuing four decades. The Silver Mist turns a pinkish hue to the point that many people mistakenly think the drums are Pink Champagne (never offered on the Standard line) but if you look under a lug you'll see the original silver. Not sure what caused this as it seems to happen evenly over entire drums rather than just on the surfaces more likely to have been exposed to UV, yet the covered parts (under lugs) don't fade as much.

The Chris Partridges (Jeremy and Brian) were early influences on me as a newbie eight year old drummer in 1970. Their terrible drum miming didn't fool me, but I was still jealous.

I finally decided to tear into this floor tom. After removing the lugs and hardware, it has the typical wrap fade that's been mentioned. I gave it the Novus #2 and then #1 treatment and it appears it's brightened up the fade a little. The lugs/hardware had a 24 hour Dawn bath and they look really clean, so the Flitz polishing should be easy.

The date stamp was smeared, so it's hard to read. If you pair it with the serial number of 10903 and reference the Ludwig Serial Number Dating Guide, then it could be a "DEC 16 1968" drum. There was one drum reported with a 10576 serial number with an "APR 27 1969" date stamp, so it's still a possibility of being 1969.

Check out that bearing edge void! I think this supports the idea that Standard line drums were the Seconds of the Main line drums. The wrap does have the tucked lap joint, so the plywood used had the Standard line wrap applied before it was formed into a shell. It also looks like the bearing edges were cut and the Resa-Cote was applied after, because the paint extends into the already cut bearing edge like it was applied with a paint brush. Plus, there were some white speckles on the outside wrap along the bearing edges.

I'll post more pictures as I start to re-assemble the drum.

I just love the way the set dec/props folks [failed to] set up Chris's tom. That angle! Hilarious....

Jeez I dunno, don't all Ludwig shells have seam lumps and separation? I mean I love Ludwig but sometimes it's pretty bad...

Nice drum though!

Yeah plenty of the main line Ludwigs have these same issues. They may have been shifting the less perfect shells towards the Standard line but plenty of them still made it into "classic" status.

The white interior on this 14x14 would support the early date (1968). The early Standard shells have the white paint (possibly using up shell inventory since the Classics went to clear interiors around then) and then they went to the gray interiors fairly soon.
