Ludwig Pioneer Snare Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi all

I am new here & decided to join as I always get great info from here.

I just purchased a Ludwig Pioneer 6 lug snare. 5 x 14 Gold Sparkle dated Aug 30th 1965 in red inside. White felt baseball bat muffler. P-83 throw off. Looks to have the original heads/snare/strings as well. This drum looks like it was barely ever used. I am not selling but am wondering what it's worth. E-bay looks to be getting anywhere from 250.00 - 375.00. man I love this website!!

Thanks!!

Not sure as to it's worth but I bought a transitional Pioneer snare a little while back.

It has the WFL P-83 strainer and butt plate, nickel over brass rims, nickel plated lugs as well as the strainer, original snare wires, no tone control, with the Ludwig transitional badge.

It has build date of Sept 1960 and is in excellent condition. I paid approx 170 for mine and it has the mahogany finish. Great sounding snare for it's age, almost 51 years old. Plus it being a student level drum.

Cherish it as I cherish the one I have!

Sorry I couldn't help with the value!

I just pick up a WFL transition badge in blue/silver duco with a date of 1959 stamped inside from Craigslist. It was listed at $175 I got him down to $150 with almost no effort and this snare drum is amazing for brush work I ran out and slapped a Fiberskyn ambassador on there and its just perfect. Although, I have a real preference to 6 lug snares. Hope this helps!

A couple of things ...

Does that have a serial number on top of that badge? I don't see one. It looks like it is lacking a serial number and has a circle R copyright in the upper right. If it is missing the serial number, it is a repro badge.

The wrap appears to me to be a more modern type.

Can you show a closeup of the badge and the seam, please.

It has the serial number & I looked it up as well so it matches the date inside. I'll post a close up pic soon. This drum is near MINT & sounds great!

I've got it's older brother (1964, gold sparkle, red felt muffler, red ink stamp). Everything is almost like-new. It's one of my favorite snare drums. I've never taken it apart and it has its original heads! I play it almost everyday. Yes, I've taken some of the collectible value away from it by putting wear on the original heads. I don't care. It wants to be played. It told me so! Burger Kin

I am SOOOO glad to hear that's all original. Man, that is a sweet drum. I loves me a pioneer snare. Just gave away a cool red sparkle one to a neat young up and coming drummer. She was in tears. Now she's researching what that "Ludwig" word means on the badge. Yes! Another vintage student created.
