Ludwig Marching Snare Advice Needed! Last viewed: 3 days ago

Hey Guys,

I music store near me has two 70's COA Ludwig Marching snare drums for sale, and I wanted to see what you guys think. Both need work, and are scratched up, etc. I'm trying to get your advice on whether you think they'd be worth pursuing and restoring. I'm also curious what these drums will sound like.

The biggest issue I see is that all four rims are bent. I think one is also missing the snare wires. My question is this: can replacement rims be found for these, or am I going to have to try to figure out how to straighten them? I believe they are 15" drums, and I'm guessing they're around 15" deep, give or take. If rims can be found, what do you guys think it would cost?

The one drum has a "Class C" throw off, I don't remember what the other one had, or if it had one period.

I know this isn't a lot of info to go by, but I hope it's enough to get a rough idea. What do you think? Yay or nay? What do you think would be an appropriate price?

probably 12x15's. that strainer is a classic strainer. a p87 to be exact. rims can be found for these if needed. unless youre just trying to make them pristine, they will probably sound fine with the rims as they are, unless they are really bent.

Here's a top shot. As you can see, the rim's pretty bent.

I stopped by and looked at the drums again. Both have the proper throw-offs and gut snare wires. One has a Ludwig Silver Dot head, which I imagine is original. He is asking $100 for the pair. Is this a good price?

My marching unit has four of these Blue/Olive badge 15x12s, and properly set up, they can sound great, but they are HEAVY! These were common issue in many military bands. They have a tendancy to sound a little tinny if you're used to playing a wood shell marching snare, but with the right heads and the snares properly tensioned, you can get a nice throaty sound out of them if you don't over-tension the batter. Although you'll have to straighten or replace the bent hoops, you're still getting two fine drums for $100.

You have to keep in mind that most marchers don`t fetch a lot of money in resale...Ludwig marching snares are common...I would say that $100 for both is too bad of a deal...Try to get them cheaper of course...You will probably sink another $100 or so into them for the parts you need...

I have a Ludwig 15" top hoop if you get them and are interested in it...I have a bottom hoop as well but someone altered the slot for the wires...I can provide pics...

Cheers
