Hi you all,

I need your expert advise again. I found barn find today, and was needing some advise as to what model, and year, quiet frankly, worth...

They are in barn dirt and rough shape, needing new heads, and a lot of work. Sorry I don't have any pictures yet, but I will post some later. They have a maple wrap, with blue/olive badges.

Sizes, Bass, 16 x 22, serial # 1156495, has two cymbal L brackets on top. Ludwig tom holders. looks like oak inlay on the rings.Walking

tom, 8 x 12, serial # 116820, looks like painted grey inside

tom, 10 x 12, serial # 1167444,looks like painted grey inside.

Also, 16 x 16, floor tom, no badge, looks like maple wrap, painted black or very dark grey.

Anyway got a very good deal, just thought you all may have an idea about these. As always....Thanks.Bucky

If they're 7 digit serial numbers, as two of three apparently are, mid 70"s?

Are these your drums ? If they are then they are 1970's Ludwig Black Diamond Pearl wrap.. As you can see, they are worth quite a bit.. But that's in the condition these are in.. If yours are in bad shape, you may have to put a lot of work into them, and that will cost you some money..

Hard to say without pics but I'll do my best. If it is a maple wrap it is probably a finish called Maple Cortex or could also be Butcher Block Cortex. These drums are probably from 1976 or so. Having a 8x12 and 10x12 tom seems very odd to me. Are you sure the larger rack tom is not 9x13? I have seen plenty of 10x14 rack toms, but no 10x12. Value can be very tricky. These cortex style wraps typically do not bring in as much $ as the pearl or sparkle wraps. A Maple Cortex matching four piece in good shape could bring in as much as $700-800. The same kit with rust, missing badges etc. could be in the $300-500 range depending on the type of issues. Again, pics are a huge help.

No, man, I wish...

I just found a set, at a barn sale, they are Ludwig, but not real sure what they are. I'm trying to post some pics,so you guys can help me ID, them. On my first thread, I was putting info I have, but I am really confused, because these have 2 arm bracket L cymbal mounts, beside where the bass toms go on the bass. I think these are 70,s, but model ????. Thanks

I am not sure about the size I was just checking when I was on the road, I will check closer when I get home. I was just excited, at finding these at the bargain price of under 50. for a bass, two toms, 2 floor toms, one is a Ludwig, the other your guess. They do have the maple cortex wrap, but curious about 2 L cymbal brackets and two tom mounting on the 22 inch bass.

The heck with the number of cymbal brackets on the drum. If they are Ludwigs, and even if they are only good for the dumpster, you have more than $50 in salvageable parts on each drum. There's an old saying around here. Without good pictures, this didn't happen. Please get us some pictures so that you can get some real answers to your questions.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

Anyone could order any number of cymbal mounts they wanted (or add them themselves). There were no different Ludwig "models" at that time. Ludwig made one type of 3 ply shell and used it for everything (except Vistalite or Stainless sets, obviously).

There were named catalog sets with unique names but they were just different combinations of the same drums. An 8x12 tom included with a Downbeat set was exactly the same as one included with a Big Beat set (which is probably the set you have but with the cymbal mounts added). Cortex is a formica type wrap that holds up very well so these may clean up very nicely.

If it is a big beat (or a Hollywood outfit, the only difference between the two being the stands that were included) then the drums you have should be 8x12, 9x13, 16x16, and 14x22 with a center post tom mount and NO shell mount cymbal holders (but people could special order or modify to their heart's content).

Pictures would help a lot.
