Ludwig Classic, Big Beat, Atlas etc. Hi-Hat stands

Loading...

Hello,

I own several of the Ludwig "flat leg" (not tubular) models of these hi hat stands, with the "Spur Lock" heel plate and footboard (regular tripod, not flush base). There are several different variations within the stands I own, and I know there are some experts out there who know much more than I do about them. Does anyone know what "era" of stand for which parts was used? Can anyone lay out a "Timeline" for these? For example:

The "strap" at the top of the footboard that connects to the piece that the lower pull rod threads into. Some of mine are metal, others are black plastic and still others are white plastic.

Also, the support rod that runs under the footboard that fits into the tripod base with the "arrowhead" tip: Most of mine bend upwards 90 degrees and then straighten out again right before the arrowhead tip. Two of mine have a straight support rod that doesn't change angles.

The tripods all look identical, I was just curious if someone new what these minor differences were between models. For the record, all of mine have the metal wing screws, not the black plastic T-handles of the Hercules days.

Thanks much!

I have a "black plastic one" that came with my '69 Jazzette kit. That's probably a pretty early version of the Atlas hi-hat. I also have a later version that has the white plastic version. So, by deductive reasoning, I would assume the metal versions were the latest ones.

As far as the arrowhead thingies...not sure. The ones I have both are the straight versions.

The metal strap should be the earilest version, then the black plastic, then the white plastic, then they switched back to black plastic again. The reason for the change in plastic colors had more to do with what supplier supplied the parts rather than any particular strength reasoning. The reason for the change from metal to plastic was pure cost. As far as the bent vs straight thing, never even noticed that before.

There is no real way to pin down a particular era of those stands (other than the earliest version like Ringo used with its true flat base, which stopped being produced in 1964) as they were made pretty much the same for so long. Big black plastic T-knobs would make them the latest ones though. I think they started doing that in the late 70's and those lasted until the end of production in 1984. I'd say yours is probably mid-70's if I was to venture a guess.

Yes, that makes more sense that the earliest "straps" were metal and then they went to plastic afterwards. But the metal ones couldn't have been around that long because, like I say, my January, 1969 Jazzette hardware included an Atlas hi-hat that had the black plastic.

In the era between 1968-1971, there were little changes here and there with small parts/designs that can sometimes cross paths.

Thanks, I'll try to post pictures tonight of the different support rods that run underneath the pedal.

Here's the difference between the straight and "angled" support rods that I was talking about. Note, both footboards are connected to the lower pull rod by the black plastic piece in the photos, but I also have metal and white plastic pieces that have both straight and angled support rods as well.
