OK,I know this forum is for vintage drums, however, I was just wondering if anyone out there tried out the new Black Magic snare drum by Ludwig. The reason Im asking the question is Im thinking of purchasing one in 8X14.I was wondering how these compare to Supraphonic's.I realize NOTHING will EVER take the place of Supraphonic's but in spite of the long tube lug's & die cast hoops on the BM's they look a lot like the Supra's.Just wanted some input.
Ludwig Black Magic snare drum Last viewed: 2 hours ago
Someone on one of theses forums bought an 8 x 14 and liked it,there are a few guys on DFO that have shallower ones and they like them too,I think I read that they are the same shell that pearl uses for the black sensitones, and what pork pie uses and worldmax,of which I have, and I think that drum is one of the best metal snares you can get for the money, consturction wise, the BM and world max are built very similar to a supra/blck beauty, same rounded over Bearing edge, same very shallow and wide snare bed, same center bead, the difference is that a supra or Luddy Black beauty made in the last 50 years is a seamless shell, the the BM world max etc is a welded seamed shell.
Definitely a very good drum. Personally, having a BM and supra side by side, I liked the Supra. I also have a BB which lives up to its rep.
it's a rolled and welded shell. A seamless shell becomes work hardened during the spinning process so the hardness of the shell will be different between the two construction methods.
Apologies for the temporary side-bar (aka hi-jack Cool Dude)... Is there really that much difference in the sound, sensitivity etc. between a vintage BB and a new one?
