Ludwig 5/16 curved spurs, originally how sharp? Last viewed: 1 day ago

I have a Ludwig 1970 20" BD with 5/16" curved spurs. The point is not very sharp so it doesn't grab into a rug very well. Does anyone know how sharp these originally were? Are the available repros sharp? Thanks

Can't speak about the repros, but the originals were VERY sharp. Enough so that they put small metal washers into the rubber tips to try and keep the points from coming through.

My kit:
Ludwig Vistalite Big Beat set consisting of:
14” X 22” bass, 16” X 16” floor tom, 8” X 12” ride tom, 9” X 13” ride tom, 5” X 14” snare
Ludwig 201 Speed King bass drum pedal
Ludwig 1124 Spur-lok hit-hat with Ludwig Standard Paiste 14” cymbals (760 & 770 gr) with ching-ring
Two Ludwig Standard S-270 cymbals stands
18” Zildjian crash cymbal (1550 gr) and 20” Zildjian ride cymbal (2130 gr) with CAMCO sizzler
Gibraltar motorcycle seat-style drum throne with backrest

Can't speak for the curved ones but the swing down ones on my 1965 Classic BD will hurt you if the rubber feet caps are off...:)

Maybe I'm missing the point...(get it?)

But I would think a few minutes with a file would provide points as sharp as you want.

The gull-wing spurs on my 12x22 WFL are darn near razor sharp, as well as a BD anchor also used. You would have to use a winch to move my BD once planted.

I know, I could file it or use a grinding wheel at my job. I have Danmar repro gull wings on my 22" BD and it doesn't move. I've considered replacing the curved spur mount and going with gull wings on my 20" (same mounting holes for the 5/16" style).
