Ludwig 1978/79? Last viewed: 2 days ago

Hello guys!

My first post here is about a B/O Ludwig set I can acquire quite cheaply, for less than 400$ with some cymbal stands and a stagg ride, but there are some things that are bothering me.

The serial number has 7 digits, so according to the timelines from vintagedrumguide.com it's from '78/'79.

What's really bugging me it's the hardware. I've never seen a double tom mount on a vintage Ludwig, nor the lugs look like original, although you can't really see them on these pictures.

I guess the owner modified them, maybe the original lugs were lost or something so he replaced them with whatever he had, or maybe he just added the badge?

I find the second version highly unlikely, because the collet is rusty, so my guess is that it has been there for quite some time, but I'm not by any means an expert so I'd like to ask someone who knows better for advice :)

Something looks fishy, I would steer clear!

Hard to get a positive I D but the only thing that looks Ludwig are the badges.

It also looks like the wrap is bubbling on top of the bass. If you wanted to restore them you would be sinking some money to get the proper parts, might just as well be patient and get an un altered kit!

Either the current owner is trying to pull one on you, or someone pulled one on him.

That's a Pearl-made set out of the 70s or 80s. As lucky says, the badges are the only thing that's Ludwig, and in the third photo to me it appears to not be the correct grommet anyway (regardless of how old it may look).

Ludwig did get into "cheaper" Asian-made drums in the late 1980s but these are NOT them.

So, I'm with RogerSling on this one... walk away!!

Here's a Ludwig Accent set that IS genuine Ludwig but with the Pearl-style lugs. This one is made in Taiwan. I was wrong in my previous post about the date -- according to Rob Cook's "The Ludwig Book" Ludwig only used this style of lugs in 1998 and 1999, then went to lug that copied the Gretsch lug of the 60s after that.

Notice the badges. They're stickers, and nothing like the pointy B/O badges on the set above.

I picked this up off CL for $100. Fixed and/or replaced a couple of broken hardware items, detailed it, and subbed in a better pedal, hihat stand, and cymbal stand and then included it in my rewrap/rebuild drum line job I did for Cherryvale HS. It's going to get new Evans heads when they get here.

Don't look bad for a cheap CL set, huh?

Thanks for the greetings!

And for the advice too :)

It'd be great if many Ludwigs, and vintage sets in general, were easily found here (I live in Macedonia, it's a tough place to live for musicians, not to mention for vintage fetishists).

I'm constantly searching for something here and in the neighborhood, Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria (this one from a Bulgarian seller), but not much is found.

And buying something from the USA is a tough job too, Paypal doesn't support our country, plus shipping and the ugly habits the employees have at our customs would double the price..although I managed to buy a 14x5 supra from the states with a help of a friend :)

I should probably stop whining now :D

A Pearl set with a Ludwig badge was obviously not what I was looking for, so I guess my quest continues, I had a bit of hope that it was just altered a lot, but I guess it's just me being desperate :D

Thanks a lot for the help, and I'm glad to be a part of this community!

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum,I'm glad you posted here before you bought any thing.

Sorry the kit was not what it was said to be,be positive and keep looking.

We have a few members here from you area of the world that post here sometimes with really cool Rare European drums, and they dig up U.S. made kits for good deal sometimes too.
