Looking for 1920s examples, painted Bass Drum Heads Last viewed: 6 hours ago
Well, now I know where all the drums I'm looking for went!....CryBaby
Very wonderful collection! I do hope they see the use of some drum sticks once in a while...;)
Whoa! Dave - those are amazing. Did you contact Harry Cangany to show him those? I sent him an email on another matter and I mentioned your collection - I hope you don't mind. He may already know about your collection but I could not resist mentioning it to him after I saw it.
A good friend & drummer bought an old ludwig kit off an elderly gentleman and the bass drum had the snowy cabin scene on it:Snow Flake: He contacted a drum museum in Chicago and they now have the kit.
Not to 'hijack" your site here - it's just for information - but I have some very nice photos of the old kit that were taken the day he bought the drums.
I'm sure he wouldn't mind me sharing if anyone is interested.
What great old drum heads - I'd love to pick one up some day.
I thought I would add a little extra info to this old post. I recently put together a page with more examples of heads and information about the painting process.
Painted Bass Drum Heads from the 20's and 30's

Drumart Jim at Drumart.com says he can put any image you can provide on a drumhead.

Bidding has ended, but you can still snag the pictures if you're interested:
I did my kick scene by cutting out a towel and gluing it to the inside of the bass drum head. Plus there's a light that sorta acts like the moon or sun in the pic. The light is a 15W and I've had a lot of trouble with it blowing after 15 min even though I use Philips bulbs touted as being robust. I ended up mounted the light on thick rubber washers and that helps a lot, although maybe LED's would work, but of course they wouldn't help stabilize the calf head. Right now my kick batter is calf and the reso unfortunately a plastic Ludwig tymp head.
If you were thinking of using a plastic head it could be that it would be better to paint on the inside and use a clear head, as that would leave the outside much more protected (like mine) when transporting it. It looks kinda cool too to be from the inside. Of course you'd have to use reverse glass type painting techniques.
I'd suggest a light and try to mount it where it makes sense in the picture. I've attached pics of my 26" kick and the painting my Grandpa did in the 1950's that I traced for the pattern of Diamond Head, Waikiki.
I have thought of mounting a Black & Decker 18V rechargeable lantern in the kick and just have the batteries snap in on the side of it so I don't have to mess with ac at the gig.
I'm still waiting (and I really want to see this) for someone to mount a USB video projector in their kick and run movies from a laptop that would be displayed on the front of the kick. Will some please do that so I don't have to?
The video could range from home vacations, to Disney, to, well whatever kind of party you were playing for! x-mas3 Maybe even someone roaming the gig with a wireless camera.
There is a nominal $25 fee for using this idea.
Sorry to dig out an old post, but I'm rather new here and have something to add to this thread...
I recently received my Grandfather's old Ludwig kit including a Universal bass drum. Both heads are painted. I haven't seen any catalogs with these images and the quality of the work is not all that great, which leads me to believe it was done aftermarket.
I'm not sure why he used the wigwam scene as his beater head, but it may be because he was a Yankees fan. Back in those days, it was always special when you beat the Indians {insert rimshot}.
