Let's play "Name that drum!" Last viewed: 4 hours ago

Hello, friends! My bf received this snare drum as a gift from a fellow garage-sale hopper, and we have no clue what it might be. I've researched all the ones I think it might be, and have had zero luck. I am hoping that perhaps one of you smart cookies can help. This snare is definitely vintage, and was kept in ridiculously good condition. The finish is white pearl. The shell is very lightweight, but the lugs weigh quite a bit, which makes us doubt it might be MIJ. It came with no badge, and appears to never have had one. Below are pics of one of the lugs, from the front and from the side. The hoops, btw, are diecast, if that helps also. Any help would be most appreciated!

P.S. I would have posted a pic of the entire snare, but my bf took it apart before that could be done. Once he cleans it up I will post a pic if it has not already been identified. :-)

Hi Gellyfish,

That lug looks identical to the lugs that are on my Sakae MIJ snare. Amazingly, I just made a post about that snare today in a different thread on this forum: http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=24005&page=2

Interesting, barryabko! Thank you for your input! I found it quite odd, though, that the snare came with no badge, yet the wrap was original. Do you know if Sakae ever made any snares without a badge? Everything else seems to fit, though. Diecast hoops, original wrap...I can't wait to find out further! :)

Mine also came without a badge but I have seen others in photos on a few drum forums that are identical to mine that have a Sakae badge.

Would you happen to have a pic of yours that I can see? And did yours have a mahogany shell? The shell is rather cool looking on mine. Reinforcement hoop is lighter than the shell, too.

The exterior of mine looks identical to the photo of the Sakae snare in the thread I linked to above. The interior of my shell has darkened because of the application of Tung oil so that probably wouldn't tell you much.

The original interior did have lighter colored rerings than the shell itself. To me however, it did look like a typical MIJ stencil shell. I'm sure the shell is luan (Phillipine mahogany) and I'm pretty sure the rerings are also luan or maybe some other lower quality wood.
