Leedy broadway snare question Last viewed: 3 days ago

Thanks for the info!

We went with a Remo Fiberskyn head to get that simulated calfskin sound, we do play occasionally outdoors and I'm told that they don't last long in that environment. We definitely dig the sound of it.

We're running a 28" leedy 1930's bass drum. I just picked up a chinese tom, some A. Zildjian 10" hi-hats, an 8" splash, and waiting on a chinese 12". I'm still looking for a good tom. Most likely a 16x16" floor tom for the era of music we play (late 20's trad jazz to mid-40's swing).

Please can someone help me get more information on my Leedy snare. Its date stamped 1940 and is 8x14 in pear white. I would like to know what material it is. When I bought the drum a few years ago I was told it was mahogany. But how can I be so sure.

I was also told it was a Broadway Parallel and from 1938 which I have now discovered are both incorrect.

I am frustrated because I paid £900 for this drum and now feel like I may have been robbed!

Help Please!

That is a Leedy "extended" Standard strainer. I have one just like it and it is dated 1939. Mine has gut snares.

Here in the UK we always have to pay more for American drums, you payed a top retail price for it, I would say it would be 500 ish on UK ebay, but 6-7 with a dealer, so a bit steep but it is a lovely drum, I don't know where you are in the UK but if you collect vintage gear I would highly recommend Mark Jeffs of Rusty drums, he ships fresh stock from the States at reasonable money.

Don't be too upset though It's a fine drum you have there and to buy a modern drum of anything approaching that quality would cost a lot more than £900
