Late 50s Slingerland kit Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

Hello all! I finally got this kit completed Jump For Joy, so I wanted to share some pictures. The first two were taken in my new drum room - which I'm very excited about - and the others were taken at a venue my band played at last Friday night.

Sizes are 22, 13, 16 and 5.5x14 steam-bent maple snare. The bass drum and rack tom are stamped AUG 15 1958. The floor tom is dated JUN 13 1959. The snare is not stamped, but has the same "curly S" badge (1956-59) as the bass drum. I outfitted them all with Aquarian American Vintage heads with the exception of Classic Clear reso heads on the toms. They sound absolutely amazing! A friend who is a fellow drummer and sound engineer came out to the gig last Friday. He said the drums sounded perfect. I asked if he was just saying that and he said, "No! That kit sounded SO good!" So, as you can imagine, I'm very happy.

As you can see in the "driver seat" photo, I have a period-correct Slingerland Epic hihat stand and AA pedal. You can also see the key, which is an old Slingerland USA key. The snare stand is a Slingerland Chicago stand, and the cymbal stands are most likely Walburg & Auge. All of the stands' bases have almost exactly the same profile and all have the riveted rubber feet...only the hihat stand is missing one foot and a piece of another. I have replacements, but I don't want to use pop rivets to install them (just wouldn't look right), so I'll try to find someone who can make them look original.

The cymbals are as follows: two 15-1/18" K Istanbul crashes used as hats (top is intermediate stamp and bottom is new stamp); 16" A Zildjian medium crash...maybe ride (trans stamp); 18" A Zildjian thin to medium-thin weight crash (trans stamp); 22" A Zildjian medium-thin to medium weight ride (late 50s stamp). These all sound great as well, except for the 16, which is a little heavy and clangy for my taste.

I hope you like them!

Lynn

Thanks, Blair!

And...while I'm thinking - and thanking - I want to thank several forum members for providing parts at very fair prices. Blair is one, as well as Legacy drummer, vintage drum bug, and Purdie Shuffle. I also want to thank the folks in charge of this great forum and the many great articles and pictures available at Vintage Drum Guide. A big thank you to the many of you who have started Slingerland threads in the past that I have gleaned so much information from, and the Slingerland gurus who have shared their knowledge in those threads and with me directly - I apologize if I'm leaving anyone out, but kevins and vintagemore2000 come to mind. I was truly a vintage drum novice when I got this kit, so the help and information I received via VDF is SO appreciated! Bowing

Again, I sincerely apologize if I have left anyone out.

For the sake of not sounding like an actor making an Oscar speech - and it may be too late - I'm gonna shut up now.

By the way, I thought I put this in the drum image gallery. What did I do wrong?

Cheers!

Lynn

Thanks for the compliments, Glenn!

I'll be posting more pics of the drum room in the not-so-distant future. The Ludwig kit is to the left of the Slingerland kit, but there's so much other junk still piled on the floor in front of it that I haven't taken pictures of it yet. I'm going to try to get the drum room straightened this weekend and take more pics.

Later!

Lynn - That is a spectacular -CLASSIC- set of drums. I'll bet they sound every bit as good as they look. If I'm ever in your neck of the woods, I want to play those! I'd love to hear them from the driver's seat.

Niiiiiiice!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Sweet kit, Lynn! I dig the period-correct hardware, too! For me, it doesn't get better than a rail consolette with a spade/diamond plate tom mount. That's what on my '58 Luddys and I dig that look!
