Last Week's Find

Last week I was fortunate enough to purchase a vintage Ludwig kit which was being offered locally by the original owner. I left a downpayment and will be picking up the kit by the end of this week.

What I'll be getting is a 1967 keystone-badged Oyster Blue Pearl Super Classic Kit (22/13/16) with factory-issued KB Supraphonic 400 snare. Included in the sale are two 1400 flat-based cymbal stands, an Atlas snare stand, a Ghost bass drum pedal, the original Ludwig cowbell and three Paiste Formula 602 cymbals -- a 20", 18" and 14".

I've currently got several vintage (60s) Avedis Zildjian cymbals which I use with my vintage kits. Actually, these are the only cymbals I've ever used through the years.

I've never played any Paiste cymbals although when conducting a recent inventory of my excess items I discovered that I do have a pair of 13" Paiste Formula 602 hi-hats. Although I don't mind keeping some "spares" around I really don't want to keep an "excess" amount that I'm more than likely never going to make use of in the future.

I'd like to get some feedback in regard to which cymbals I should consider as "keepers" and which I should consider as "movers" between the 1960s Avedis Zildjians and the 1960s Paiste Formula 602s. Feel free to provide any information regarding the comparative values of the two brands also.

As usual, any and all "words of wisdom" would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!Bowing

I would keep them all............:)

But just as a side note, I see a heck of a lot less 60s 602s for sale than 60s Zildjians........ so maybe the 602s are more desirable?

Yeah, even though I am a Zildjian guy, I'd probably opt tp keep the 602's because in the old catalogs, Ludwig offered Paiste cymbals to go with their kits.

I just bought Poppy's formula 602. I'm not even a Paiste guy. Just want to see what the buzz is about. Maybe I'll love it. Maybe not.

Thought I'd add a few pics of the drums that came with the cymbals.

I'm still looking for one 22" bass drum hoop as well as some 60s Oyster Blue Pearl in-lay material for the missing hoop. If anyone's got either of these items or knows where I might be able to get them I'd appreciate the information.

THANKS in advance for your time and your help!

Needless to say, those look beautiful. And, even tho' I have dozens of A's, my early 602's are my favorites. They are beautifully made cymbals, way ahead of their time. It's incredible that they were making these back in the 60's. If you want to sell,(you won't), PM me first.......marko

Marko,

THANKS for the kind words. I do appreciate them.

In regard to the cymbals, should I decide to sell them, I'll definitely be in touch.
