Krupa experts: your opinion is needed here! Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Help2I found a 10x14 Duplex "Spirit of Louis" Butterscotch Marching Snare drum at a Swapmeet around this area. The Batter head is the one pictured. There's an autograph that reads" To (Omar?) Good Luck

Youre the Best!!!

Gene K....(rupa)

(Omar) ink its very clear but I cannot say if the name its "Omar"."Oman" or something like that

Then :"Good Luck" and "Youre the Best!!!" are pretty clear

"Gene K" same thing. Now if you look hard enough with a light on the back of the head "R,U, big P and A" barely visible...

The head is a no name very old coated one which lost most of its coating. My good friend Teenagebrain came over to repair one of his Ludwig hoops and checked the head out and he thinks its a very old Remo. He confirmed the barely visible R,U,P,A after the name Gene K...

I've been checking Krupas autograph on several sites online and it wouldn't be crazy to say that the typography is not that different from much more clearer examples of Krupa's autograph. The intention and approach of the writing itself "feels" like It could come from the same person. As a matter of fact if we check our own handwritting from several years ago we can see differences from our actual writting but the style remains...

I dont know. I'd love to think that I have the real thing here...But Id like to have you guys opinion. Thanks in advance!!!!Help2

I have a GK autograph, met him back in the 60's, yours has some similarities, particularly the K. Could very well be the real deal.

I've looked at a bunch of his autographs and I can't recall ever seeing one where he compressed the bottom of the "g" in his first name. That's the beginning of his embellishment and is pretty much always extended dramatically. Even when he's rounded the top part of that "g", the bottom is still extended somewhat and kept fairly thin.

Second, I'm not seeing enough similarities in the script lettering of the lowercase portions. Here's a couple of examples from around the net.

Thanks! do you mind sharing some pixs of yours? Now, questions for the rest of the gang: Should I paint white the back of the head to tone the faded ink up? Should I try to "reinforce" the tone of the ink with regular ink using a magnifing glass? Would that kill the value of the head? Thanks in advance!

When I sold a bunch of Gene Krupa items, there were some autographs involved, and I looked at dozens of GK autographs in order to figure out if mine were authentic. I am almost positive that your autograph is not Gene's. The style is not pointy enough, too loopy, the bottom of the G should extend much further down, and when he wrote cursive he ALWAYS attached the "t" to the "o" in the first "to". People's writing styles change over the years, and it is impossible to say with 100% accuracy whether an autograph is ever authentic or not. But if I had to bet money on it, I would say it's not real. Sorry to be a downer!

Thanks,

Bill

So would someone actually try to come up with such a silly joke as faking Krupa's autograph? Ive heard that nowadays theres a lot of fake autographs but was there even a market for that kind of stuff back then? And if youre trying to fool someone wouldnt you try to make it really close to the original so it wont look fake?...I dont know...I see similarities on the rest of the writting not just the words "Gene Krupa". But Thats just my opinion...I guess it would be really expensive to pay a Calligraphy expert?

Did they have magic markers in Gene's day? I wonder that because whatever that says, it looks like faded marker.

It is magic marker. He died in 1973 Im pretty sure markers are older than 1973. The marker its really faded.
