Didn't Danny Seraphine in the early CTA days use a drum like that?

I'm a Slingerland user, but I never understood the point of 2-to-1. I want as much control of the bottom head as I have with the top, especially with a snare head.

I like my 10-lug TDR (and all other 10-lug snares that I own, including a Supraphonic and a deadly Yamaha Oak Custom) just fine. Seems to me like 12 lugs is overkill and six isn't enough.

• 1975 Silver Sparkle + 5x14 SD (Rapid strainer)
• 1974 Chrome + 5x14 COB TDR and 6.5x14 COW Zoomatic SDs

I completely agree! I had a 12-lug COB Spitfire back in 1979. What a hassle to tune! It wasn't until decades later that I finally realized you have to make LITTLE turns on the tension rods, since they're so close together.

Yep, 12 lugs is overkill! I love all my 8 and 10 lug snare drums. I've got some Slingerland 6-luggers, but I don't use them. However, I have a 70's Pioneer that matches my blue sparkle Super Classic kit, and it's killer!

But, I digress. As for the 2-to-1, it was a drum that was poorly conceived and didn't sell. Because of that, it is now a rare drum and ideal for any Slingerland collection. Would I pay $500 for it? Noooooooooo! Well, maybe if I had the money burning a hole in my pocket and really needed the drum to finish off my collection!

The two to one snares were an almost last gasp for Slingerland and didn't come into being until the late 70's much later than the CTA days. Danny used a variety of snare drums with Chicago, but did use COB snares in the early days (Sound kings).
