Joe Morello Technique Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

While doing a bit of work this morning, I was listening to some Dave Brubeck on Youtube. As I worked, I was hearing some interesting something Joe was doing with his hi-hats that seeped into my mind, so I watched the video to see what was happening.

In the opening moments, you see Joe on his signature silver sparkle Ludwig Super Classic set, and initially you are caught by the lovely sound of his bass drum. Looking and listening closely you see how he is working the hi-hat foot pedal to get some beautiful of-beat washes as well as the normal chick sound. This is even more evident up around 4:30 to 5:10 minutes or so. So subtle. It's part of why jazz is so interesting to see live. The Ludwigs sound great in this video, as always with Morello playing them.

Joe was one of my drum hero's growing up. The guy who never gets enough credit in that band is Paul Desmond! The man played the most soulful music ever on that tenor sax. I know it was Brubeck's band, but Desmond should have been the featured player in that band not Brubeck. Genius saxophone player. Great touch and feel on the instrument.

Same goes for Joe...

Got to love it

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Joe was an amazing jazz musician and a rudimentary genious. He was a gentelman and a guiding light for those that tried to emulate him and for those that were luck enough to study under him. Most do not know that at the end of his career, when he taught he was basically close to if not blind. He would come to lessons with his guide dog, ask the student to play, and knew his trade so well that if you messed up, he would stop you from playing and say....hey, that's not what's on the chart, it's like this, play it on the snare, or kit and say, let's try that again. Joe was one of, if not one of the most Ill forgotten musicians of our time.

With the most admiration and respect to Joe

Michael
