Jimmy Smith's Drummer?

Loading...

Greetings.

A question for you vintage buffs.

Which drummer played on Jimmy Smiths original recording of "Walk on the Wild Side and " Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf "

Donald Bailey, Grady Tate or possibly Ed Shaughnessy?

I love the classy drumming on these recordings, and, would be grateful for the answer.

Cheers.

Ed was the Tonight Show drummer for many years. Back then, I used to watch almost every night and one of the many things I enjoyed about the show was, watching Ed play. He's not only good, he's one of the most versatile drummers I ever heard. That band had to back up all the many singers that were booked on the show. Every different style of music you can imagine. Ed and that band, (Skitch Henderson era,) played it all and played it well. Fun drummer/band, to watch.

Mr. Purdie, you are amazing! I had no idea of the drummer for "Walk on the Wild Side" although that is one of my favourite tunes. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, my friend!

Brian

Just a drummer who loves all things about vintage drums! Nothing more, nothing less.

Grady also played on "Jimmy & Wes The Dynamic Duo". Really good stuff.

Used to love when Buddy would appear on the Tonight Show and jam with Ed. I should check YT for video. Aaaahhhh. Memories.....

Ahh those were great memories. I used to love it when the set designer opted to install a mirror over Ed's kit so you could see him from behind. Those duals with Ed and Buddy were great. Plenty of YouTube footage available of that.

It seemed like I never went to sleep before the end of Carson.Loved the band and Eds playing on that huge double bass Ludwig set.I think he also had the biggest muttonchop sideburns and medalion I've ever seen too.

Hey John, was it not Doc Severinson? or Skitch Henderson?

Those were good times for TV music.

I think Ed played Pearl Drums for awhile on the Carson Show.

Hmmm, I 'think' (if memory serves,) that Ed played for Skitch Henderson (Doc was first chair trumpet in that incarnation of the band,) and Louis Belson played in Doc's orchestra. Honest, I'll have to look it up, it was so long ago that I can't trust my memory on it. Regardless, the Tonight Show Band was a serious 'Big Band' to contend with. An All-Star stage band in all era's.

Funny, I remember Ed playing a Ludwig kit! Another one I'll have to look up.

John

PS - (Added later) Hah! I was right! Here's Ed playing his Ludwig kit on the Tonight show in a head-cutting session with Buddy Rich.

Enjoy!
