Is this a Ludwig Snare or an "imitator"? Any experts? Last viewed: 5 days ago

Hi,

I am novice to vintage drums and enjoy learning from this forum.

There is a Ludwig 4x15" "Concert Dance" Model listed on Reverb here:

In reviewing Ludwig's catalogs from 1922 they stated there are "imitators" but won't have the name Ludwig on the drum. This drum does not have that but otherwise looks identical. Were there really "imitators"?

The seller indicates that it was not uncommon for this to happen. Is that correct?

What do you all think? Any experts in the "know"?

I would assume by "Imitators" they meant, "The competition."

Yeah, some of these earlier ones can be tricky to Id properly. I'm certainly not up on these as much as I'd like to be.

I just went and looked at my late teens 4x15. Mine has a much larger center bead, but some of the earlier ones did. Mine does also not have Ludwig embossed on the shell. But, it has Ludwig & Ludwig on the top hoop. That small vent hole appears to be the same as mine. I think the drum in your pics has the snare butt mounted upside down possibly?

I'm sure it's a fine drum no matter what, based on the period and construction. And yes a Ludwig 4x15 would be a Concert Dance model.
