I thought Ludwig "Black Beauty" snares had engravings around the shell. Maybe that was something special? I just remember seeing something in an early '80's Ludwig cat. I remember they were awesome-looking, even though they weren't Gretsch.

There are no letters anywhere around the control knob. I will post some pics soon.

Also check behind the throw-off for letters. It will look someting like this.
