Ok, what is the most economical, yet safe way, to ship a drum set from the US to Austria?

USPS says the boxes are too large to ship with them, and FedEx prices I am getting online are way too high. I was expecting several hundred dollars, and I am seeing estimates way above that.

While I welcome all advice, the advice from people who have actual experience doing this would be the most beneficial.

The 2 boxes are 29x29x23 at 46ibs., and 25x25x23 at 40 lbs.

Matt both of those boxes are oversized you're gonna get killed on the ship rate. what sizes is the bass drum again? you can ship thru usps with a 22" size box?

The bass drum is a 14x22. Of course that is the shell size, not the assembled dimensions.

The biggest box USPS will ship is 24x24x18.

Even if I strip all the lugs, the tom mount, and the receiver for the spurs off of this drum, 24" is not big enough to allow for adequate padding to protect it from damage. The hoops are 23" wide.

A box 24x24x18 will simply be too tight.

Both FedEx and UPS websites are giving me quotes that are very expensive, even when I use box dimensions smaller than I gave in my first post.

I though maybe a freight shipping rate would be cheaper, but apparently freight shipping is for boxes 150 lbs. or more.

Since USPS bases size limits on total inches combined, I may have to strip the drums, pack them in the smallest box feasible, and pack the hoops in a 3rd box that is maybe 25x25x6 or something like that.

I'm going to have to rethink my packaging.

Strip the bass down..wrap it in bubble wrap.

Nest all other drums..

Remove hardware from certain drums to allow other drums to fit inside of each other.

Give special attention to the snare.

Use the 24/18 box..should be @80lbs ..

* b4 fitting each drum inside of the others...to save on space ...wrap them in shriek wrap.

So they don't get scratched.

Pkg lightly...otherwise the weight wil add up..

IPS Parcel will likely be by far your cheapest route. They basically commingle small orders into larger freight shipments.

tillerva, thanks for the IPS suggestion!

At first I thought you were making a joke, and that IPS was just the fictitious company that Doug on the tv show King of Queens worked for.

I had no idea it was the name of a real company.

Their prices look like they will be the same as shipping through the post office, yet the package will ship via FedEx, and I can use boxes larger than the post office will accept.

I never thought this would apply to me, but here I am needing to ship a kit from Florida to Canada. I plan on pricing around, but is there a known best option for shipping to our friends up north? I may need to use two different carriers as I have no choice but to ship at least one oversized package.
