Was cleaning out the stash of old snare wires and found this early 60's set for a Ludwig Super Sensitive Snare. They're in remarkably good condition, but much longer than any others I've seen, measuring 16" from end to end (including the butt attachments). One wire on the end is slightly 'bowed' but the whole set pulls out straight when I hold the butt plates and pull diametrically simulating the pull of a strainer. I'm interested in listing them in the 'for sale' section but first would like to know for which model snare drum they were made and their approximate sale value. Anyone wishing to acquire them is welcome to PM me with an offer. Thanks!
ID help needed for Ludwig Super Sensitive Snare wires
Yep super sensitive snare wires for sure.
They're probably for a standard SS in which the wires run past the rim about an inch on each side of the drum?
16" actually sounds short for SS wires.
Mine measure about 17 3/4" total including ends.

Agree.
Actually I measured a couple of these.
Those from 60's are a little bit shorter, and from one extreme to the other is 45 cm or 17"3/4
Newer ones (70's system up today) are 46 cm (18"1/9)- just a little bit longer-

Those look like 70's or later. The 60's wires wire 12 strand and had a different style end piece. Measure them again, they should be close to 18" from end to end.
Cam
I remeasured the wires.
They are in fact approximately 18 1/4" end to end. Excited
Many thanks to member Heraldo Blasco whose reply was spot on!
Now, are these wires are of any value?
Should I just hold on to them and wait for the next thirty dollar Super Sensitive Snare to show up on CL?
Maybe I should just toss them into the trash can - they're way too long and don't fit in with my other spare snare wire sets. Toilet
I guess I'll have to enquire about them on the DFO forum where all noted vintage drum collectors and great minds meet to share information. Yes Sir
p.s. The GC drum expert salesperson says I need a pinstripe snare side head and a marching kevlar batter side head with a center dot and extra weather stripping all around the edges in order for these wires to be sensitive especially when I put them on my Pearl picollo popcorn snare and is this true? Do I put a diecast hoop on the bottom and tune with a tune bot for the John Boneham sound? And what sticks sound best with these wires on the picollo?
Don't pay much attention to the GC drum "expert"..........

You are welcome Buckie, a pleasure to help.
These wires worth maybe 20 bucks, if they are in good condition.... Don't you ever put them into a trash can!
Tomorrow never Knows L.O.L.
Regarding your enquiry about heads and hoops, allow me to say:
1. I'll never be voluntarily offensive or disrespectful, but a "GC drum expert" sounds like an oxĂmoron to me
2. Regarding sound, tuning or "color palette", there's not just one formula... (you can see "Top Drummers" using splashes on their snares!! LOL),
BUT.... As an owner of more than10 S.Sensitives allow me to tell you, that I'll never recommend a head as a pinstripe on it.
Best combo (I.M.H.O.) is Ludwig Medium coated on top and Evans 360 hazy 300 or just a diplomat bottom snare.

Good luck and enjoy your baby!!
