I can't identify a snare drum :: slingerland Japan copy?

Hello!

I've got a new snare drum, and it was just told to be a "SLINGERLAND MADE IN JAPAN"... I didn't receive it yet. Just got these pics.

Is it a vintage copy by a japanese company?

Does someone know which snare drum is it?

Yes, that is a copy snare drum.

There will not be an exact match, they are all the same, just named differently, or like yours, no name at all.

Look at the wood and the hardware...

Hi David,

This is a STAR (pre-TAMA) snare. Produced around 1970/72. The damper system is called 'one touch', as half of a turning puts the damper on/off.

The finish was called 'gray diamond pearl'.

STAR was copying at that time a lot of different things from different drum companies, such as Slingerland, Rogers etc.. So that's why someone might think it's a Slingerland - but it isn't.

What about this snare drum? 1970/72 Star's were good?

I was checking the Japanese snare drums page from the guide website and I couldn't find a catalog or page with finish types, etc. Can you tell me a link to check?

STAR's quality was extremly good (I owe a set from the early 70s with still outstanding chrome condition: it still looks like being bought yesterday!). Not to be compared with many others showing 'chrome pitting' in the meantime.

To my optinion the drums from this company are undervalued, because they could not be found at every dealer at that time. The marketing situation/ strategy changed first with switching their name to TAMA.

I've received the snare and I could check the catalogue.

I think it could be a 3356 model (8 lugs) Imperial STAR. From 1972 catalogue. The finish is "gray diamond pearl", as you said. ;-)

I'll upload some pics very soon!

I toke details of strainer, butt side, lugs, tone controller, etc.

I'm happy, it came in great condition!
